After a quick interactive quiz to test the civics knowledge of our Club, Luke spoke passionately about how today’s students aren’t getting the opportunity to learn how our country and our government work. He pointed out that the US has had a couple of wake-up calls. The 1957 launch of Sputnik highlighted our need for science and math. And the 1983 report from Reagan’s National Commission on Excellence in Education report … “A Nation at Risk” … showed deficiencies in our educational system and underscored how we were falling behind competitively with other nations.

Today’s schools don’t spend much time teaching civics, given all their other priorities. The NAEP scorecard (National Assessment of Educational Progress) doesn’t even rate civics education on a state by state level. If we wanted an informed and engaged electorate to build a strong government in the future at all levels, we as a nation need to fund and promote civics education.
