Hybrid Meeting August 12, 2022

Last Week's Meeting:

August 5, 2022, members of the Rotary Club of Madison West Middleton gathered at the Arboretum.

Our very own member (and previous Arboretum Director, Greg Armstrong) along with current director, Karen Oberhauser, conducted a short tour ending up at the oak Paul Harris planted on May 4, 1933.
UPCOMING PROGRAMS:

August 12 - Our own Terry Siebert will report on the wonderful variety of Wisconsin dinner clubs that he and his wife Kathy have enjoyed. Program by Ed Fink.

August 19 - Madison native and world class bridge player, Glenna Shannahan, will discuss her craft and has taught on several cruise ships including the Crystal, Royal Canadian and Princess ships and played in ports of Greece, Turkey, England and Ireland. Locally she teaches at the bridge club of Madison. A player needs 500 points to become a master bridge player and usually takes 3 to 10 years to accomplish. Glenna has a whopping 7,000 points and is the only master teacher in Wisconsin. Program by Jim Olmsted (through Sharyn Alden).

August 26 - County Executive, Joe Parisi, will bring us up to date on county government affairs regarding, cleaning up lakes, climate action, harmful gases made into natural vehicle fuel, to "Suck the Muck" from the Yahara River and renewable energy programs. There will be time for questions and answers. Program by Jim Olmsted.

September 2 - No meeting Labor Day Weekend

September 9 - Picnic at the Pope Farm. Don't miss this wonderful program by UW Geologist/Professor Eric Carson (who has talked to us on numerous occasions and may become a member). Eric will talk about the geological formation of the Pope Farm before and after glaciation. You can see it before your very eyes as you gaze out at Lake Mendota.
Program by Jim Olmsted

September 16 - Open

September 23 - Though now largely forgotten, UW-Madison chef Carson Gulley was a celebrated figure for his groundbreaking efforts crossing racial barriers as a culinary instructor, radio and television celebrity chef and as a pioneer in the local struggle for equal housing.  Gulley used his fame to engage in a series of efforts to achieve equal standing in Madison and the state. The story of his life provides examples of the persistent practice of segregation and exclusion that African Americans actively experienced in Wisconsin. His is an important part of the still untold story about African Americans in Madison.

September 30 - Lori Bessler of the Wisconsin Historical Society will talk about the top 5 genealogical collections in the United States and Canada. The staff brings together Services that include workshops, consultations and reference to assist researchers of all levels. Lori, Reference Librarian, will present information on the basics of genealogical research and highlight the amazing collection you will find at the Wisconsin Historical Society. Program by Jim Olmsted

October 7 - "Hearing Loss- The Silent Epidemic" Monique Hammond, a hospital pharmacist who lost her hearing in her left ear, wrote a book called "What Did You Say?" will discuss various aspects of hearing and the stresses that hearing loss creates. She also discusses on how to prevent hearing loss and better ways to cope with it.  She has spoken to over 240 Rotary Clubs and had 130 Zoom calls to clubs in the US, Canada, Australia, Scotland and the UK.  Many of us in our Rotary Club have hearing disabilities.  There will be time for lots of questions and good discussion.
Program by Kathy Roberg.

October 14 - Our own Dana Monogue, Superintendent of the Middleton School System will discuss the upcoming referendum. This will be an on-site luncheon at the brand-new Pope Elementary School, next door to the Pope Farm where we often picnic. Program by Kathy Roberg.

Service Project & Fundraiser

The MWM ROTARY – (Madison West Middleton Rotary) has applied for a $500 grant that we will receive if we have 10 (now I hear 15 – bring your family) people volunteer for the IRONMAN OF WISCONSIN. No, not a lot of money – but a lot of fun at a huge community event … that is all good and fun!!

Jenny Aune (yes, wife of Steve) is in charge of the Run Personal Needs area on the Capitol Square Sunday, September 11th 2022. She describes this job in this way: “This is at the halfway point (13.1miles) of the marathon portion of the race. The athletes drop their bags to us before the race. (04:30–06:30 am) There are opportunities to volunteer early or in the afternoon. In the afternoon we hand them their bag as they run by our station. It’s really fun and inspiring.”

Here is what you need to do to register yourself:

1. Go to https://ironman.volunteerlocal.com/volunteer/?id=61147

2. Scroll down to RUN PERSONAL NEEDS (SUNDAY) CAPITOL SQUARE (or any job – we don’t need to register for same thing)

3. PICK YOUR TIME

4. BE SURE TO REGISTER AS Madison West Middleton Rotary

If you would like me to register you – send me your name.

Thank you for the bulletin. Glad to be on the list.

Is there a roster for the West Towne Middleton club membership? This would help me get acquainted.

Team McAdow Bike Rides

For many years, the Madison West Towne – Middleton Rotary Club held an ongoing fundraiser called “McAdow Miles”, designed around Charter Member Jerry McAdow’s love for biking. In recent years it has evolved into “Team McAdow” to include participation by others who enjoy biking in a group.

We try to schedule a group ride each Saturday morning, starting in March and continuing into November, as the weather permits. Our bike rides are typically 10-to-18-mile loop rides (versus out-and-back), on off-road bike trails (as much as possible) with interesting sites, away from noisy highways, and sometimes include coffee shop or bakery stops, preferably with outdoor seating. Madison and Dane County offer a great variety of bike routes.

Now, with our expanded membership, we would like more members to join our group rides. We welcome other family members and friends to participate. This year, a number of riders are using their E-bikes.

The fundraiser aspect of Team McAdow is very low-key. We haven’t been asking for per-mile pledges, but we encourage our riders, other Club members and non-Rotarians to make annual contributions to this event. We will provide additional information in the coming weeks. Perhaps more than anything, Team McAdow provides an opportunity for us to spend time together doing what we enjoy – camaraderie, exercise and fun!

If you would like to join us, or for more information, please email or call John Olsen, johno.olsen@gmail.com, 608-220-2826. We try to email a ride plan to our riders on Thursday or Friday each week.

Here is the ride plan for this Saturday, August 6th:

We will meet at 9:00 am in the parking lot in East Verona where East Verona Avenue intersects with Hwy PB (southwest quadrant - enter off PB). We’ll make a clockwise loop around Verona, starting west on the Military Ridge Trail, past Verona Beach, Verona High School and Epic, back east along PD, north along M, and back on the Ice Age Junction Trail. Most of this ride will be on off-road bike paths. There will be a couple hills to make it interesting, but we will have a nice long downhill glide at the end. The total distance should be about 12 miles.
