Van Nutt, Middleton Chamber of Commerce

Van talked to us about the planning that goes into the future of the Middleton School District, given the growth on the west side of greater Madison. They’ll be expanding Middleton HS because they’re at capacity now. They’re also looking at 20 acres just east of Pope Farm Park, plans are still uncertain. Considering a cross-country ski training facility with trails and ski runs – writing grants right now. Also talked of need to redo the intersection of University Avenue and Parmenter Street. Current construction on University Avenue is going slowly – now in Phase 3 or 4. Lots happening. Van is a knowledgeable and amusing speaker.

Rio Lindo Inaugration

This is the second of three bridges being built in Guatemala. It is being accomplished because of a global grant submitted by the RClub of Milwaukee. We are a participating club, I.e. $1000 of what must have been in excess of $50,000.

Mary McCormick sent me a rendering of the plaque to be affixed. It listed us, along with others, as RC of West Towne-Middleton. I asked her, if not made or too much trouble, to change it to RC of Madison West Towne-Middleton.

In any event, this certainly appears to be money well spent. At some point, we might to have someone do a presentation on this. I would happily try to arrange for it. Also, this demonstrates cooperation between three Rotary districts.
Here are photos of the second bridge opening. Construction of the third bridge will start in August.

Annual Canoeing Event

This year’s canoeing event will be held on Saturday, August 5th. The departure will be from Blackhawk River Run on the Wisconsin River located at 10032 Hwy Y, Mazomanie. Registration Deadline: Wednesday, August 2

The cost per canoe is $35.00. This 9 mile run is fun and scenic. Canoes, paddles and life jackets are provided. Bring your own lunch and beverages (no glass please). We will pick out a nice sand bar for our picnic and swimming. Get there about 9:45 for payment, instructions and map. Departure is at 10:30 sharp. Arrival in Arena will be at 3:00 sharp. A bus will take us back to the parking lot in Mazomanie.

This is a great event for children, grandchildren, relatives and friends. Many of you look forward to this Rotary event every year. So far I have reserved 15 canoes. Let me know as soon as you can so that I can give Blackhawk the final tally.

If you have your own canoe the cost is $25.00.

Sun Flower Days

Pope Farm Conservancy is owned and operated by the Town of Middleton. The following is general info from the Sun Flower Days Logistics Meeting.  Last year, it was estimated 80,000 people visited the site, thus making it one of the premier summer attractions in the county.

First and most importantly, due to May’s weather, the planting did not go as planned.  Thus, Sun Flower Days has been moved to begin Saturday, August 12, thru Sunday August 20.

For those who have done this before, there are some changes in procedures for sign-in, wavers, and responsibilities.  I see these all as very positive.  There must have been 15 supervisor volunteers at the meeting  plus a Town of Middleton Officer who gave good guidance to cover the anticipated crowds and traffic problems.

The conservancy will be open from 8:00 am until shortly before sun set.  Volunteers are to arrive 15 minutes early for sign-in and instructions.  All these are relatively easy, working in 2 hours shifts except for 10-12:30.  There are 6 shift times.  ALSO, there will be shade, either natural by trees or portable tents at each parking assignment location  There will be 5 locations of them.  Water, sun screen, and “treats” will be provided for our volunteers.  Our volunteers need to be “animated” in their direction to direct parking.  We will also be soliciting memberships to the visitors by passing out PFC brochures as the cars exit the area.

Signups for parking volunteers will be done on-line.

Here's how it works in 3 easy steps:

  1. Click this link to see our SignUp on SignUp.com: http://signup.com/go/CSZEBnr

Please let me know if you have any problems or questions---I’m hoping this will be easy peasy!  Thanks a ton for all Y’All do for Pope Farm Conservancy!!!!!

Rotary Friendship Exchange News

We had a successful experience hosting 8 Rotarians in our district.  We had traveled to Gujarat, India in January, and they came to visit us late in May.  They enjoyed visiting Chicago, Dells, La Crosse area and Madison area.  Many homes were opened in our district, while our Rotarians hosted and showed them around.

We are looking for persons interested in hosting a group of Rotarians from Peru.  It may be a small group, from 4-10 persons, arriving on Tuesday, August 15 and leaving on Thursday, August 31.  If you and your club would like to be a host for a day, a few days or more, let me know.  Please send an email to Dave Clemens, drdave@dellsdental.net, and let him know of your commitment.  You will be expected to pick them up from the previous club, provide a room, meals and entertainment, then make sure they make it to the next community on their itinerary.  It is great fun, which we want many clubs to enjoy.  Don't miss this chance to enjoy the fun of a Friendship Exchange.

2017-2018 Member Grant Program

A $1000 District 6250 Membership Grant is now Available!

District 6250 has an exciting new program that we heard about from a District in Australia.  They have seen great success with membership growth with this grant program.  Not only have they increased membership, but their new members have developed many new and innovative community programs. In their district, they had 17 clubs that recruited 4+ members in under 6 months.  Each of these groups of new members have given their club a project that has engaged their community and given their club an opportunity to increase its public image.  That is growth and publicity that D6250 needs to allow us to change even more lives in our own back yard and all over the world.

The District 6250 Board has agreed to allocate $5000 for these membership grants.  This is a new endeavor that, if successful, will help grow our clubs and expand our reach.

The first 5 clubs to recruit four or more new members between July 1, 2017 and April 30, 2018 will be eligible for a $1000 grant for these new members to use for a project of their own.  These members must remain for 4 months for the club to be eligible.  Once you have met this criteria, please contact one of our membership co-chairs.
