Speaker Recap June 10, 2016

International MWTM Rotary

Ed Fink and Paul Patenaude spoke to the Club about the broad involvement our Club has had for years in overseas projects, from the Orphan Train (founded and continually powered by Ed) to water and orphanage projects in South America, from Haiti health efforts to Jeannine Desautel’s endless healthcare journeys – our Club has a long history of reaching around the world to do good. A repeated refrain in the presentation was ‘Why Not You?’ Many members participate now. MWTM Rotary can always use extra help in logistics, in housing foreign visitors, to traveling overseas for hands-on helping. Pitch in!

Aloha, New Members!

At last week's meeting, President Derek Moehring pledged to welcome new members into our club by donning a Hawaiian shirt for each new member induction in the fiscal 2016-2017 year! Our goal is 13 new members, so let's make sure Derek has to wear his Hawaiian gear at least 13 times!

Friendship Exchange between Nepal and USA

Would you like to visit Nepal for a Rotary Friendship Exchange?

UPDATE: The Nepal trip must be from September 27 to October 20, matching the National Education conference that will be held soon after we arrive. They want our district to get involved in helping them improve the education system in their communities. And, a two week tour has been created for us, visiting the center of the country.

Our costs include airfare and rental cars, and Dr. Clemens is working on an estimate.

We can finalize details later, but everyone interested in taking part in the Friendship Exchange to Nepal should be ready to confirm very soon.

If you are interested, please contact Dr. David Clemens at the contact details below:

Thank you Seoul!
Our Club was very well represented at the Rotary International Convention!

Club President Derek Moehring, Jeannine Desautels, Mary Van Hout, Mary Cobb Dunn, John and Geri Gerold, and Dean Ryerson have been with more than 43,000 other Rotarians from around the world at the Rotary International Convention in Seoul, Korea. Among the speakers have been United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, the Prime Minister of S. Korea, and the Prime Minister of Sri Lanka. All reminded Rotarians of the important work around the world being done by Rotary International. A highlight of the experience was the visit to the Demilitarized Zone separating North and South Korea and the chance to step briefly into North Korea during that visit.

News from Rotary International
Whenever I arrive in a new country, one of the first places I go is a bookstore. I do this for several reasons. Having spent much of my life and income in them, I always find them to be comforting spaces. And they often stock more specific maps and guides than you can get outside the country. But the real reason I love these places is that by scanning the titles for sale – just gazing down the spines – I can get a glimpse of how people in that country see themselves. What stories do they tell? What stories do they read? What books do they print? And what do they import from abroad? And though...

Rotary members, their families and friends can support Rotary’s work by bidding on antiques, artwork, jewelry, and collectibles through eBay Live Auctions events. Each month, Rotary will promote on its social media outlets a set of upcoming Live Auctions events, and eBay, the world’s largest auction website, will donate a portion of all sale proceeds from those events to Rotary. Live Auctions events enable buyers to participate in auctions across the United States -- held at such auction houses as Sotheby’s, Swann, and Freeman’s -- without leaving home. Under this proceeds-sharing...
