Heading to France in August, Gary (from Memorial High School) used our Club as a testing ground for the Rotary talks she’ll be giving in France on her life in Wisconsin. They’ll be in French, of course, but she made accommodations for us and gave her talk in English.
She’ll be heading to Club #1660 Île de France Ouest, which includes the district immediately surrounding the capital, and the area to the west. There are 67 Clubs in the District. She doesn’t know much yet about her academics there or where she’ll be staying. She’ll be in France for for a year.
She spoke about her growing up – she’s an active young woman with lots on interests. Skiing is high on her agenda. She spoke about the state, which its farm background, its sport teams, and Madison and its famous Farmers Market. She’ll do us proud.
Our Club was honored with a visit form Dick Meister on Friday April 28th. Dick presented the club with a check for $250 for the Meister Meter Fundraiser, with the requirement that club members match the $250 with donations of no less than $250, or he would take his check back. Dick also mentioned that he, “Made some minor changes to the Meister Meter this year.”
When pressed for the details of those changes, after the meeting on April 28th, Dick indicated that, “Certain quadratic equations and mathematical algorithms that have an underlying systemic value; however, minor or regressive those might be, were adjusted to compensate for outside variables of a less than dynamic nature.” Sources, unconfirmed, reported that the person interviewing Dick on this topic could only respond with, “How does it feel to be 91?”
Club members were given two Friday to match Dick’s $250 donation (Friday April 28th and Friday May 5th). As of 1:30 p.m. on Friday May 5th, the tally was as follows:
Donation From Dick Meister $250
Donations From Club Members $651 and counting *
Total Funds Raised For Meister Meter Fundraiser $901 and counting *
Meister Meter Fundraiser Goal For FY 2016 – 2017 $1,000
*Several additional donations are still expected and a final tally will be given by Dean Ryerson, Treasurer once all donations have been received. If you would like to make a donation, please contact Dean Ryerson dryerson@tds.net
The MWT-M Rotary Club annual Charity Golf Outing will be Monday, June 26, 2017 - please sign up as a VOLUNTEER to help make this fundraiser a success. All ages welcome!
Our golf outing this year is scheduled for June 26th at the Pleasant View Golf Course. In addition to golf, we will also be holding the silent auction. This is a special request for your involvement in contributions to the silent auction.
First, a shout out thank you to those who have already responded:
• Kevin for the Bucky Book
• Jeannine for her special donations • Peder for the UW football tickets and Food Fight gift cards • Mary Feldt for horseback riding lessons
We will also include 3 holiday trips from Philantopia and I will announce them next week.
We need many more donations to make this silent auction successful. Donations could include sport event tickets, gift certificates from restaurants and/or hotels, your cabin or condo for a week or your special talents.
Help with preparing leader packets, measuring and cutting rope and other duties to make sure group leaders have everything they need. Prior to June 1.
MAD CITY CHALLENGE GROUP LEADER Each leader is assigned a group of 5-6 kids. Kids are given a list of tasks to complete around Madison (primarily around UW Campus/State St.).
Group Leader's Responsibilities:
Make sure the kids stay in a safe environment. They are out in the city so bus stops and crossing streets, etc. The kids are required to be holding onto a 10' rope from the time they leave Jefferson until the time they return. They may let go while on the city bus and bathroom stops. If at any time a student lets go of the rope - the group leader cuts off 6" of rope.
Check off tasks as the kids complete them. Leaders are not allowed to help their groups complete the tasks. No giving directions, hints, etc. - kids are on their own.
First Group goes Thursday, June 1st, second group Friday, June 2nd. Day of event 7:30am-2:30pm. If possible we meet the day before the group goes to go over any questions. Typically after school 2:40 pm for maybe a half hour.
Just to be clear, a group leader will walk with the students for the entire day which can add up to about 5 miles. If keeping up with middle school kids is a challenge, the party and/or preparing material might be a better fit.
You can make a difference in our community - participate in this and other great volunteer opportunities at Jefferson Middle School. Just click in the link below to download the volunteer application form and take the first step.
PIZZA PARTY

It is time again to think about whether you want money from our Rotary Club, District 6250 or the Rotary International Foundation. If you are interested in funding a project, please contact me so we can discuss how to write the best grant and to decide which grant application is appropriate. An abbreviated description is as follows:
Money from Our Club--for grants of $5,000 or less. The deadline was May 1st.
District 6250 Grants--for grants between $5,001 and $30,000. The deadline is May 25th. The grant must be sustainable and fall within 6 focus areas. This requires member involvement. A request for money only will be denied. You must submit he grant application to the District.
Rotary Foundation Grants--for grants of $30,000 or more. There is no deadline for filing. The grant must be sustainable and fall within 6 focus areas. This also requires member involvement.. A request for money only will be denied. It also requires an international partner Rotary Club. The District will assign a mentor to help you write the grant. You must submit the grant to the Rotary Foundation.
The Rotary Club of Madison West Towne-Middleton is sponsoring a high-school aged girl from Poland. She will arrive here in August, 2017 and is very excited to experience American culture.
Her host families need to live in or near the Memorial School District as she will be attending Memorial High School. If you or someone you know may be interested in hosting her for 3-4 months, please contact us.
I am looking for drivers for Best (Rotary Youth Exchange student) to get him to and from school/Rotary meetings. If you can help out with any of these dates please let me know ASAP. I now have to inform the school as to when he will be leaving for the meetings and it is helpful to let them know who will be picking him up and bringing him back. Thanks so much!
If you are volunteering with youth (one-on-one)? Mentoring, Youth Exchange, RYLA, Academic Decathlon, High School Business Plans, Etc... You must have an annual background check completed. This only applies if you are working with youth one-on-one. If you are in a group more than 2 people, you don't need a background check.
Please let me know of any events or special situations in our fellow Rotarians' lives where a card, flowers, or a plant would be appropriate for their situation.
