Stories
Rotary Youth Exchange

Alba Valle Izquierdo (right) from Barcelona, Spain, enjoyed some Halloween fun with two other Exchange students. She also celebrated Thanksgiving dinner and helped decorate these beautiful Christmas cookies at the Fose residence. She is also seen showing off her Christmas stocking by the fireplace. Alba is a delightful 18 year old who enjoys travel, skiing, reading and writing. She is excited to experience American culture and would like to go to a UW Basketball game. Please keep her in mind for any activities you are planning.

She has recently moved to her 2nd Host Family, Mike & Kristin Jenkins.

She can be reached at (608) 692-2484, avalle96@hotmail.com or via Dan Fose, Youth Exchange Officer or Connie Smith, Youth Exchange Counselor.

A friendly reminder that there will be a dinner prepared by Alba, our exchange student, on Sunday, December 14 (time to be determined).  Deb Dieter is hosting the event at her home on 5102 Denton Pl on Madison's west side.

Alba will be preparing tapas, paella, a Spanish dessert and sangria.  She is trying to raise funds so she can go to Hawaii with the other exchange students.

Please reserve your seat at the table by sending an RSVP to Jeannine Desautels at jeanninembd@gmail.com.  The cost is $30 to be paid in advance so Alba can buy the ingredients for the meal.  Please email Jeannine this week and give your check to Jeannine on Friday.

Muchos gracias!

Spring Social is on Saturday, March 21 at Bishops Bay.

More details coming soon.
Every three years the Council on Legislation meets to deal with legislative proposals called enactments that have the potential to determine how our organization conducts its affairs.  If a proposed enactment receives a favorable vote from the 530 representatives, it will find its way into the Manual of Procedure, the governing document of Rotary.

There are three enactments that are being proposed by clubs within District 6250.  The Council on Legislation receives only those enactments that are approved through the club voting process.  In addition, the enactments, if approved through that process, must be approved by the Council on Legislation, which consists of one voting past district governor from each of Rotary's just over 540 districts.

The enactments are to be voted on by each member.  This is not a vote by the club.  Thus, motions from club members relative to the enactments are not in order.

Each club member may vote to accept or reject the enactments.  The Rotary Club of Madison West Towne-Middleton will do a paper ballot on December 12, 2014.

Members who cannot attend the December 12th meeting, may vote online (CLICK HERE).  If you vote online and attend the meeting on December 12th, you will NOT receive a paper ballot, nor will you be allowed to vote again.  Online voting will end at 9:00 am on December 12th.

Organized discussion will take place at the Club Assembly on December 5th.

To read more about each enactment visit:  http://www.rotary6250.org/COL
The slate of nominees for the board committee chairs was presented to the members-at-large on December 5th at the annual business meeting.  Additional nominations were requested from the floor.  No additional nominations were submitted.

Cory Recknor moved and Mick Fuhlbauer seconded that the nominees submitted by the Nominating Committee, be approved.  Voice vote all in favor.

For six staff members from Rotary headquarters in Evanston, the fight to eradicate polio has become personal. Together, they biked the physically grueling 104-mile (167-kilometer) Tour de Tucson in Arizona, USA, collectively raising more than $20,000 for polio eradication while putting their bodies and minds through a feat of endurance. For the tightknit group, the experience was about more than just raising money and crossing the finish line. It was about learning about each other and what Rotary members are doing to rid the world of this crippling disease. They advocated together, trained...

Two years ago, U.S. Rotary members in Maine set out to improve the education system in Bikaner, Rajasthan, an Indian city near the border of Pakistan. The Rotary Club of Kennebunk Portside chose Bikaner because club member Rohit Mehta was originally from the area and had connections there. Mehta put the club in contact with Rotarians in India to provide desks for four government-run schools. But when community leaders returned with a request for more desks, the Maine Rotarians decided they had to think bigger. The Rotary Foundation had rolled out its new grant model, which required that the...

Before college, business school, or their first jobs, more than 2,000 U.S. high school students are learning what it takes to become tomorrow's brightest business leaders. Each year, nearly 25 Rotary clubs and districts conduct three-day educational retreats in a program known as Camp Enterprise. At each retreat, seasoned business professionals and entrepreneurs teach 100 or so area high school juniors how to develop, launch, and operate a successful business in a free enterprise economic system. The intensive weekend camps, funded entirely by the clubs and offered at no cost to participants...

Rotary General Secretary John Hewko and six RI staff members bicycled 104 miles in Tucson Arizona, USA, on Saturday, for the Miles to End Polio event, raising more than $6 million for polio eradication. The money raised by Rotary will receive a two-to-one match from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. In addition to the team from Evanston, 100 Rotary member riders took part in the ride. The fundraising ride is part of the annual El Tour de Tucson bike event in Tucson, Arizona, USA. The race attracts more than 9,000 cyclists a year, making it one of the top cycling events in the U.S. The...

To strengthen their 69-year-old partnership, leaders from Rotary and the United Nations met this month in New York City for Rotary Day at the United Nations. The two organizations began working together with the aim of maintaining peace after World War II. Today, the relationship has evolved to include humanitarian work in areas like gender equality, child and maternal health, and disease treatment and prevention. While the UN's Millennium Development Goals are set to expire in 2015, its leaders are preparing for an even more ambitious humanitarian agenda of eradicating extreme poverty by...
