Speaker Recap, Feb. 4, 2016
Speaker recap, Feb. 4, 2016
Speaker: Ken Thompson, President/CEO of Capitol Bank
Topic: Economic Outlook

Challenging times, with many countries stumbling. U.S. faces large public debt and any efforts to reduce spending face very large percentage of difficult-to-reduce entitlements. Just 59% of population is employed. About 30% of the people without jobs have been out of work for more than six months. China's underperformance hurts everyone in the global economy, perhaps the U.S. a bit less than most. Although consumer confidence is rising, they're cautious. We'd expect dramatically lower gas prices to spur some spending, but it hasn't. The future is very murky, and economists have consistently failed in their predictions. On the bright side, local economy is very strong.

There is a loose leaf binder on the table full of old photos.

Please take a moment and write the names of the people in the pictures on the available Post-its and attach them to the photos.
Thanks.

President Takes It Off

At the January 29 meeting, Club President Derek Moehring discussed the need to relax and have fun during Rotary activities. Leading by example (like a good leader does), he shed his suit and tie, revealing a Hawaiian shirt underneath!

Basketball Slam

Buy a ticket and your four teams are listed under the scratch off portion of the ticket.

The total scores of those four teams determine the winners and losers. The folks with the eight highest scores and the four lowest scores are paid cash.

You sell one discount ticket for $10.

You sell two discount tickets for $20 and the buyer gets a third ticket FREE  (emailed to them after they register the first two tickets) on Green Bee Fundraising website.

The discount portion of the ticket takes you to a website where you can get discounted offers in various businesses. That is what people are paying for; the Basketball Slam is an added bonus.

If you have tickets you must turn in the stub and the money by March 17, 2016 or return the tickets to Deb, Mick or Kevin.  You will be responsible for any missing tickets.

If you are going away during mid-March, TURN IN YOUR TICKETS BEFORE YOU LEAVE!

If you want to buyout of the fundraiser, the board suggests a $75.00 donation to the foundation.

President's Club Vision
At the January 29th club meeting, Club President Derek Moehring provided members with a summary of the club's Visioning meeting that was held on January 6th.

At the Visioning meeting, Derek presented the group with his Vision for the club. The President's Vision can be found below. Also at last weeks club meeting, Derek had members fill out a "Member Questionnaire". If you were not at last week's club meeting, please be sure to fill out a Member Questionnaire (which will be available at every club meeting in the month of February).

If you would like to have a Member Questionnaire emailed to you, contact Derek at derek.moehring@capitolbank.com or call him at 836-4304.

Central to the President’s Vision are Members
Gowing our membership is

Adding new members and retaining our existing members are the keys to our club’s success.
Members

The Club Needs To Have a Clear Vision
First, determine what we want our club to look like in three to five years (Strategic Plan). Next, determine what we need to do to get there (Tactical Plans). Our Vision should address our club’s membership, service projects, public image, leadership development and involvement in The Rotary Foundation. Finally, determine how all club members can contribute to achieving our
Vision

A Key to Success is Having Members Who are Empowered
Develop and maintain a culture that promotes the practice of sharing informaiton and power with members so that they can take initiative and make decisions to solve problems and improve our club’s overall performance. Empowerment is based on the idea that giving members the skills, resources, authority, opportunity and motivation while holding them responsible and accountable for the outcomes of their actions, will contribute to their overall satisfaction and keep our club dynamic and successful. Empowerment is different than delegation. Delegation is task-based while Empowerment is decision-based. Every member of the Rotary Club of Madison West Town-Middleton should feel empowered to shape our club’s future.
Empowered

Another Key to Success is Having Members Who are Engaged
Club involvement keeps new and long-time members Engaged. Engaged members feel ownership of and dedication to their club’s Vision. Engaged members are “Tuned In” to what is happing, they are “In The Know” and are actively participating in the two way communicaiton process between club leadership and club members.

MWT-M Book Club (Team 2)

MWT-M Book Club (Team 2)

The original MWT-M Book Club has been meeting for several years but not taking any new members due to club size. Therefore, about two years ago a few members started a second MWT-M Book Club. We meet every other month, usually a Tuesday evening at 7pm and end around 8:30pm. In January we discussed "These Is My Words" by Nancy E. Turner. Our next meeting is scheduled in March and we will discuss "Being Mortal" by Atul Gawande. In May, we will discuss "Killing Lincoln" and in July, "The Witches" by Stacy Schiff. We rotate our meeting location which is held at one of our homes.

If you like to read and would like to participate in our lively discussions, please consider joining. You may contact any one of our members: Char Breunig, Deb Dieter, Ruth Domack, Bill Hinckley, Paul Patenaude, Susan Prest.

News from Rotary International
Rotary members, their families and friends can support Rotary’s work by bidding on antiques, artwork, jewelry, and collectibles through eBay Live Auctions events. Each month, Rotary will promote on its social media outlets a set of upcoming Live Auctions events, and eBay, the world’s largest auction website, will donate a portion of all sale proceeds from those events to Rotary. Live Auctions events enable buyers to participate in auctions across the United States -- held at such auction houses as Sotheby’s, Swann, and Freeman’s -- without leaving home. Under this proceeds-sharing...

A new email purporting to be from Rotary Foundation Trustee Chair Ray Klinginsmith is targeting Rotary members. The email falsely claims that members can become End Polio Now ambassadors if they email club information to a Gmail address within 48 hours. The fraudulent email has the subject line “BECOME AN END POLIO AMBASSADOR” and is sent from a fake email address. This is a scam. Rotary staff is working to resolve the issue. Avoid being the victim of scams by deleting any email that appears suspicious.
