Nancy Comello on Educating Indigenous Guatemalan Midwives

Nancy’s work is helping to fight an enormous problem in Guatemala’s rural areas … mothers and newborns dying from a range of shortcomings … training, medical care, and clean water.
Guatemala in on Mexico’s southern border, and it’s one of the poorest countries in Latin America. The population includes indigenous peoples (mostly Mayan) and Ladinos (a mix on indigenous and Spanish). The gross national income is just $5,120 a person, and 21% of the population lives on under $1 a day. 41% of those dying are under five years old. The government Ministry of Health is not much help; doctors can at best take care of 20% of the population. And there’s a long-held prejudice against the indigenous peoples. Infant and maternal mortality rates are extremely high. And the statistics aren’t reliable. And most of the patients and staff are illiterate and don’t speak Spanish. Not an easy problem.
Nancy’s work (25 trips since 2005) is to train trainers … show native people the basics of birthing and maternal and newborn care in a culturally sensitive manner. They use mannequins to demonstrate. The overall goal is to develop a corps of indigenous midwives who know the culture and know how to deliver basic medical care related to childbirth. Noble work in a very challenging environment.

Think about riding with us!

This is an invitation to join the McAdow's Miles Bicycle Team.  It's a fund-raiser, a community builder, good exercise and a lot of fun! Whether you're a competitive rider, a leisure rider or anything in between, just join the team.  We keep track of totals with a goal each year.

We also meet most Saturday mornings for group rides of 15+ miles.  Of course, you can ride until you need to turn around if you need to return early.

If you are interested in joining us, contact John Olsen, Leo Edelstein, Jerry McAdow or Paul Patenaude.

We Need a Youth Exchange Officer

Our club has been participating in Rotary Youth Exchange for a long time.  I'm not sure exactly how long we have been involved.  I joined the club on 2-14-14.  Shortly after that, at my first district conference, I told Toni Pabon that I would help her out temporarily while she looked for someone else to take her place as YEC.  Needless to say, I fell in love with Youth Exchange and have been doing it ever since.

Volunteer Needed for the Middleton High School Interact Club

Recently the Middleton High School has formed an Interact Club. Interact is the high school version of Rotary. Through Interact, Rotary clubs invest in young leaders. Rotarians guide, support, and work alongside young people as they build leadership skills, serve their communities, and increase international understanding.
The Madison West Towne-Middleton Rotary Club is co-sponsoring the Middleton High School Interact Club along with the Madison West Rotary Club. As a co-sponsor, we share responsibilities for guidance, mentorship, and support. When Rotary clubs partner to co-sponsor Interact clubs, they increase the number of Interact supporters, strengthen their community collaboration, and share responsibility for youth service. By working together as co-sponsors, Rotarians expand their network beyond their own club and build new friendships.
