Program Ideas

Jim Olmsted runs the speaker program. He’s provided us with a range of interesting speakers over the last few years, both flesh-and-blood and virtual. But Jim’s fertile mind could use some assistance in coming up with program topics and contacts. Who do you know that could present us with an interesting program … hobbies, company insights, sports, hunting, crazy collectors, you name it. The only exclusions are politics and speakers that just want to sell us something. Think about the people you know … neighbors, old/new friends, people at your office or social club. Do your ruminating and then send an email to Jim at jolmsted7562@gmail.com

Thank You to the Club from the UW Odyssey Project

Thank you so much for your generous gift of $1,000 to the multi-generational UW Odyssey Project. In the attached photo, you will see five of our beautiful alumni. Two have master’s degrees in social work from UW, one serves on the UW Board of Regents, one went from homelessness to a UW bachelor’s degree and business of her own, and one directs plays in Chicago. All five say their participation in Odyssey inspired their transformational journeys and encouraged their children to view themselves as college-bound as well. These five represent just a small sampling of the nearly 500 amazing graduates of our program. Gifts like yours truly do change lives.
As we begin the 18th year of the award-winning UW Odyssey Project, we are filled with a mixture of sadness and excitement. We made the difficult decision to move the entire fall semester online for Odyssey, Odyssey Junior, Onward Odyssey, and Odyssey Beyond Bars, and this means we must work extra hard to get our low-income families the technology and resources they need to succeed. We are exploring creative ways to provide lively, engaging, and life-altering education online, but we sure miss the hugs and shared community meals!

We know that Odyssey will continue to empower families to break a cycle of generational poverty by providing them with a free jumpstart course in the humanities, enrichment for their children, wraparound support, and continued course work following graduation. The pandemic has made it especially difficult for students already struggling to put food on the table, pay their bills, fight depression, and take care of their families. Since March, many have lost jobs, childcare, transportation options, and other basics. We continue to help our new students and alumni earn college credits through our Odyssey Project Fund while also using our Odyssey Family Fund for emergencies such as groceries, gas, household supplies, and medications. Facing centuries of racial and economic injustice, our students also need assistance with obtaining laptops and internet access. We are so grateful for your financial support, as it is needed now more than ever.

Thank you again for your generous gift. Please let me know if you have ideas for me (individuals and organizations you know, for instance) as we seek new sources of funding for our future. Our website has programmatic updates, videos, student newsletters, and various ways to help us. Best wishes to you and your loved ones in staying safe during these troubling times. odyssey.wisc.edu

Sincerely,

Super Bowl Squares from Madison South Rotary

The cost for each square is $50. There are 100 total grid positions and I will randomly assign you a location. 60 spots currently taken.
You will be assigned one number from the AFC Team and one number from the NFC Team. The numbers will be drawn via randomgenerator.org once the entire grid is filled. I will create a ZOOM meeting for the number drawing. Tentatively I will plan on Friday, 2/5 around 2:00.

At the end of the 1st quarter, 2nd quarter, 3rd quarter, and final score there will be a winner. 1st, 2nd, and 3rd quarter will be $500. Final score will be $1000.

In order to win you must match up BOTH of your numbers in the ones column of the score.
  • Hypothetically let’s say the Chiefs and Packers are playing
  • If the score is 6-3 at the end of the first quarter with the Chiefs winning you would need 6 for
Chiefs and 3 for Packers to win o If the score at the end of the game is 35-28 with the Packers winning you would need 8 Chiefs and 5 for the Packers to win

50% of the money will go to Madison South Rotary Foundation with the other 50% going to the winners
Payment can be done a few different ways. If paying with the first 3 please note “Rotary Squares.” There is No Limit to how many squares one person/family can purchase:
  • You can Venmo @adam-peck-14
  • You can Paypal to apss14@yahoo.com. Use friends and family option o You can Zelle to apss14@yahoo.com. Last 4 of phone is 1200 if needed o You can mail Cash or Check to:

A Letter from Goodness in Nigeria

Hello my Favorite Americans!

Merry Late Christmas and Happy New Year to you all. 2020 was surely a crazy year but it did teach me to value lots of things; be it family, friends, pets, food, and even people I don’t know.

You are all people I value a lot and some days I just sit on my bed looking at pictures or reminiscing on my exchange year with a huge grin plastered on my face. I really do miss you all a lot.

Well, update on my life: I have been having health issues for months now but I am taking medications now and it is getting better. I would always have stomach pains in which I would sometimes curl up and cry a lot. Lost lots of weight, cried about it a lot cuz I was getting skinnier each time, even has my bones sticking out at a point. It was terrible because people would always comment about it and some would say nasty stuffs which clearly made me feel worse. Stomach pains got worse also the weight loss hence had to leave college and take the first flight home.  Went to the hospital and turns out that I have peptic ulcer which is a sore in my stomach. Taking medication
and now I am getting better, it was crazy December for me cuz I was on a low bar in every aspect of my life.

Good news is that I am now a junior in college, almost done and would soon bag that law degree.

How are you doing?

How was Christmas and New Year?

How are the state affairs?

  Love,
  Goodness

Job Opening: Second Posting

I’ll be finishing up my fourth year as Club Secretary at the end of June. I’m willing to continue with the newsletter, but I’ll need a replacement for Secretary. The job will deliver to you immense power and the respect and fear of all members. Mostly a paperwork job … tracking attendance (once we escape COVID); prepping, attending and taking minutes at monthly Board meetings; and being the go-to person for inquiries of all sorts. It’s a great way to get engaged in the nitty-gritty of how the Club actually works. Salary negotiable, although non-existent. We won’t check references. If you’re at all interested, drop me an email and we can talk. I got a $15 Panera gift card for Christmas, and I’m willing to throw that in to sweeten the deal.

Paul Harris Fellow Selection

From Mary Van Hout … Our Club tradition is to recognize members with an honorary Paul Harris each year.
The recipients are chosen by those who have been honored by our Club in the past. Even in these unusual times, that tradition will continue!!

Please mark your calendar for February 5th at 11:30 AM for a virtual meeting to determine who will be honored. I will email meeting details closer to that date. There is some thought to having this recognition occur at our next evening dinner social, based on the success of our previous event. This would occur in March. Again, further details to follow!
