Applications are being accepted through February 1, 2019 for the upcoming Summer High School Exchange program. The Rotary Short Term Exchange Program, known as STEP, is a Family-to-Family exchange for students ages 15 to 18. This is a great program for students not interested in our one-year exchange program.
Students submit their application indicating their top 3 country choices and a match is established with an international family. The U.S. student spends 3-5 weeks abroad with their host family. During the same summer, the U.S. student hosts his/her brother/sister in the U.S. Exact dates are determined by the two families. There is no academic component to this exchange. Some of the countries available in the Rotary STEP: Brazil, Czech Republic, Ecuador, France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland. For more detailed information, go to www.rotary6260.org/STEP or email: Rotary6250.summerexchange@gmail.com / 608-577-6395, coordinator Janine O’Rourke
The Orphan Train Project received good news a few weeks ago from Joanna Jones of TLC, the children's home we sponsor in South Africa. Joanna, a recent "Glenn Koepp Scholar," reported Elen Ambraal, who works with young learners in TLC's pre-school program, has completed the third and final phase of the online Montessori course. The scholarship for this educational opportunity was provided by the generosity of Peder & Jeanne Moren and Mary Beth Barnett, who donated to the Madison West Towne-Middleton Rotary Foundation, Inc., with their suggested use being the Orphan Train Project. Elen took full advantage of our donors' generosity, scoring all A's in every one of her courses. In her e-mail, Joanna writes: " I am so happy to be able to tell you that Elen has passed the Montessori course with flying colors! Every day I watch the huge impact she is having on the lives of our little ones and I am proud of her. Thank you for making it possible "

If you’re interested in joining, drop me an email, and I’ll pass you along to the group.
At our November foundation board of directors meeting we reviewed our funding and commitments. For fiscal year 2018-2019, we funded all approved projects and still had a total of $5,635 available. In one instance we did not receive a district matching grant for Jefferson Middle School. Further, we did not have approved projects to use all the community service funding. Due to high demand, all district matching grant funds have been committed already. In keeping with our mission, we would like to find a way to best utilize these undesignated funds.
We will accept applications for such undesignated funds no later than December 31, 2018. If anyone from the club has a project that requires funding, they should complete the Undesignated Funds Request (available on Club Runner) and submit it to the appropriate Avenue of Service Chair as follows:
Community – Kevin Welton
International – Steve Aune
Vocational – Roxanne Brazeau
All funding requests will be reviewed by the chair, who will make final recommendations to the board of directors. The board will review all recommended projects and vote to approve any such projects at the regularly scheduled board meeting January 15, 2019. Applicants will be notified of the board decision shortly thereafter. If you have any questions, contact Matt Loch at matthew.loch@tdsmetro.com.
As of Saturday, November 24, the McAdow Miles Bike team has ridden 15,044 miles. Thanks to the riders.
Jerry McAdow Tony Burns John Olson Todd Weigand Leo Edelstein Paul Patenaude Svein Morner Peter Hoff Mary Ruth Marks
There are some who will still ride through the end of the year but this is the figure we'll use to wrap up the fundraiser. If you've pledged and paid, thank you so much for your support!
• If you've pledged and have yet to pay -- now is your time! • Don't be left behind.
If you haven't pledged yet, you can still do it. Help make the McAdow Miles Bike Team fundraiser a success.
Paul will send out donation receipt letters for tax purposes after the end of the year. If you have questions about your pledge status, contact Paul at ppaten98@gmail.com.
If you’re unable to make a Club meeting, but want to keep your attendance up, there are several easy ways to do this: Simply go a meeting at another Club within two weeks (before or after) your missed meeting at our Club. Fill out the paperwork when you attend that meeting, and then send our Secretary an email … or enter it yourself in ClubRunner. Here’s a list of area Clubs and meeting times:
Go online to rotaryeclubone.org and spend an hour or so reviewing articles or watching videos about Rotary programs. You can then click a few buttons to submit that as a makeup for your missed meeting.
Take on a volunteer commitment or attend a Club meeting other than the normal Friday meeting. Working Oakwood Bingo, sitting in a Board or committee meeting, helping out at a food pantry, pitching in with Middleton HS Interact Club, getting dirty with Adopt-a-Highway – all those efforts count as a makeup. You can enter the makeup online or send the Secretary an email.
The Club and Foundation Boards will be meeting on Dec 17 at 7 am. We meet at the TDS Corporate Building on Junction Road. Park in the food mall south of the building and enter through the nearest TDS entrance. Then turn left. We’ll be looking for you. Meetings typically run until 900.
If you have something you think should go into our weekly Bulletin, please send it to me at the email address on top of this Bulletin. Please include the phrase ‘FOR THE BULLETIN’ in your subject line.
Regular participants need to pay $56. We had 13 Club members opt to ‘double-commit’ theirdollars, so they pay $112.
The closest guess to total points was Cherie Gon @ 375, so she’ll half her amount: $28.
No one will be billed: you have to pass along a check at the next meeting or mail it to our PO Box in Middleton (see the bottom of this Bulletin).
Assuming we ain’t got us no deadbeats or ne’er-do-wells, Pigskin Payoff will net the Club $3,332.
Finally, part of the PP was garnering some non-perishable foodstuffs for one of our food pantries.
For every game the Badgers won by 20, participants would bring in 1 item at the end of the season. The Badgers won two games by at least twenty, so each PP player should bring in two non-perishable items. Bring them at the Dec 14 meeting!
Thanks to all the members that put their wallets on the line to raise money for the Club!
Jim Wartinbee received his seventh Paul Harris Fellow Recognition at our Nov 16 meeting.
If anyone has current emails for Jerry Smith and Dick Meister, please pass them along to me. My Bulletin emails to them are not getting through.
The Board approved (via emails) a $200 donation to The Beacon, a comprehensive day resource center for people who are experiencing homelessness in Dane County. The onset of cold weather has caught their clients short of socks and other items. Our donation (spearheaded by member Barry Pace) will go toward the purchase of socks and small Target gift cards.
