The Wisconsin effort started in 2005, taking veterans to Washington DC to honor their service. There’s no charge for the veterans. Badger Honor Flights have honored more than 2,100 vets so far, with another 900 on the waiting list.
A typical chartered flight has 90 vets and 70 guardians. There are currently four flights a year. They leave Madison at 7am for the flights to DC. Over the course of the day, they’re greeted by bands/choirs and cheering crowds, including active duty military. They visit Arlington National Cemetery, the Lincoln Memorial, and Memorials from WW2, Korea, and Vietnam. They also enjoy a tour of the city, participation in a group photo, and a mail call with notes from relatives and family at home. This is part of a nationwide effort, with honor flights in 42 states.
My husband and I were missionaries in England with a Judeo Christian ministry before coming to work at Mooseheart Child City & School in 2005. Our youngest daughter just turned one and our oldest was two and half years old. We moved into a teenage boy's home called the Michigan Home. While working as a Family Teacher I was fortunate enough to be able to go to school and get my bachelor's degree in Human Services from Judson University and my master's degree in Public Policy & Administration from Northwestern University.
We worked as Family Teacher's from 2005 - 2016, when Dean accepted a job working for the Salvation Army as the Child Development Coordinator and I accepted the position as the Training Coordinator at Mooseheart. As the Training Coordinator my biggest responsibilities are to train all new Family Teachers in the Mooseheart Model of Care as well offering advanced training for veteran staff.
Under the provisions of the Rotary Foundation’s program, club’s desiring to participate in the grant program must be certified. Part of that certification process is attendance at a Rotary Grant Management Seminar (GMS). District 6250 will offer three Grant Management Seminars.
There will be a training session for grant management in Madison on Thursday, March 23, 2017 from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. I have already signed up and hope to see several club members on March 23rd.
If you plan on writing a grant with a total expenditure of over $5,000, I encourage you to register. The grant is rather long, and I want you to enhance your ability to obtain a grant by knowing the process and knowing what can be funded. You can register by going to rotary6250.org. The location will be sent to you.
Usually a club can get one grant per Rotary year from the District. If you have a grant request for $30,000 or more, this is submitted to the Rotary Foundation (the Foundation of Rotary International). The District will assign you a mentor to write this grant.
Grants will be due in May. Please do not wait until the last minute or month to start.
If you have any questions, please contact: Lynne Spielman, Club Grants Chair • spielman@chorus.net 608.850/5732.

Lucas C. Schell was approved by the board at the board February meeting as a new member of our club in the Mortgage Banking Classification and Sponsored by Steve Aune.. The Branch Manager at Platinum Home Mortgage since 2011. Lucas was graduated in Business management from the University of Phoenix.
Mary Van Hout and Mary Dunn were among the group of Club members in District 6250 that traveled to India Jan. 29 – Feb. 10, 2017 as part of a Rotary Friendship Exchange with District 3030. We were each hosted by two different Rotarian families, we spent one night on a train, and several nights in a hotel. More on that at some later time. We visited various club projects and attended the District Conference in Surat.
Now it is our turn to host. Rotary District 6250 Rotary Friendship Exchange Committee has received information from Gujarat, India (western India) that Rotary District 3060 has six couples interested in traveling to our Rotary district for about 10 days in May/June of 2017 (exact dates TBA). Travelers pay their own airfare, first hotel night and perhaps any rental car fees. Hosts on each end of the exchange program support the visitors with room, board, entertainment and perhaps transportation while in the country. Our district is seeking four clubs to host our Rotarian guests in their homes during the ten-day visit in May/June 2017 (dates TBA).
Contact the David Clemens (District 6250 Rotary Friendship Exchange chairman) at 608-408-8941 or drdave@dellsdental.net for more details and/or you are interested in hosting some of the group members when they visit our district.
Last Friday Derek announced that the Madison West Towne-Middleton Rotary Foundation, Inc will match dollar for dollar up to $1,000 all donations made by Rotary Club of Madison West Towne-Middleton members to the Claire Fung Memorial Fund. The Memorial Fund was created to support the young twin sons of Claire Fung, Bill Mowbray's daughter, who passed away suddenly a few weeks ago.
Member donations to the Fund can be made in one of two ways:
New Donations: Bring cash or checks made payable to the Madison West Towne-Middleton Rotary Foundation to any Club meeting in March and give the check to Derek Moehring, Dean Ryerson or Ruth Domack.
Donations Already Made: Many Club members have already made a donation to the Memorial Fund via the website that was set up to accept donations on-line. If you have already made a donation using this website, please let Derek, Dean or Ruth know the amount of your donation and that amount will be counted toward the $1,000 match.,
The Rotary Friendship Exchange program gives Rotarians (including spouse or significant other) the opportunity to host and visit Rotarians around the world. In addition to experiencing other cultures and making lasting friendships, an exchange provides a strong foundation for carrying out other international activities and service projects.
The primary goal of a Friendship Exchange is to build greater international understanding and goodwill. In addition, exchange participants can learn how their vocations are practiced in other parts of the world, observe new customs and cultures, and promote an appreciation of cultural diversity worldwide.
David Clemens is District Friendship Exchange Chairman.

I ran into Kevin Micklitz, Lorelle's husband, at a convenience store today. I worked with him a bit when I was still in advertising. I asked him about Lorelle. Recall she's had a history of health problems and recently had a stroke. He said she was not yet back to work and was in physical rehab. He said she was doing well.
I am looking for drivers for Best (Rotary Youth Exchange student) to get him to and from school/Rotary meetings. If you can help out with any of these dates please let me know ASAP. I now have to inform the school as to when he will be leaving for the meetings and it is helpful to let them know who will be picking him up and bringing him back. Thanks so much!
Our annual high school scholarship program has been under the watchful eye of Susan Prest and Allen Sherwood for a number of years. They have streamlined the process and documented the program. It benefits 2 high school seniors each from Edgewood High School, Madison Memorial High School, Middleton High School and Wisconsin Heights High School. We award a one-time $1,000 and $500 scholarship to a candidate for a 4-year and 2-year college, respectively. In addition, Dick and Ellen Meister have funded another $1,000 scholarship for a HS senior pursuing a STEM field.
We are looking for one or more persons to lead this valuable, high-profile program for the club. This is the time of year that the program gets rolling. So, make this your year to make a difference!
If you are volunteering with youth (one-on-one)? Mentoring, Youth Exchange, RYLA, Academic Decathlon, High School Business Plans, Etc... You must have an annual background check completed. This only applies if you are working with youth one-on-one. If you are in a group more than 2 people, you don't need a background check.
