Are volunteering with youth (one-on-one)? Mentoring, Youth Exchange, RYLA, Academic Decathlon, High School Business Plans, Etc...
If YES, you need to have an annual background check completed. CLICK HERE for more details about how to get your background check completed. This only applies if you are working with youth one-on-one. If you are in a group more than 2 people, you don't need a background check.

Fellow Rotarians and Friends of the Orphan Train Project: As many of you know, our club's foundation is currently an Orphan Train conductor for TLC Children's Home in South Africa. In that capacity, we have supported the high school education of two girls. Because of our involvement I wanted to share with you the attached newsletter.
Children come to TLC as infants, many staying till adulthood, though others are adopted by families around the world. HIV/AIDS is, often a reason some of their "angels" leave this world, all too early. If you are going to South Africa, consider visiting TLC. Rachelle Richardson and another former member did so several years ago. I had the privilege of visiting with TLC founder Thea Jarvis, on her visit with one of our Orphan Train conductors in Pittsburgh, years ago. If you don't have plans to visit Africa, at least check out their website at www.tlc.org.za. Maybe, you know someone that would like to be part of their volunteer efforts.
I am honoured to be the author of this newsletter. I am finally well after a long illness that left me in bed for the last 5 months of 2014. This was followed by my 12 year old, Mighty’s, battle with a life threatening infection but at last the middle of the year brought fresh energy and renewed passion for the amazing work we do here at TLC.
Things are changing at TLC, we are heading into a new “visionary process” to help us make sure we can continue loving our babies well into the future. We are reassessing our leadership structures and our fundraising methods but most of all we are trying to reconnect with YOU!
For too long we have been slumping under the pressure of finance and security. It is time we got up and began to reflect the magnificence of God’s provision in keeping this work alive for the last 23 years. Surely after such a long time we are not suddenly going to be brought to zero.
I had the opportunity, this morning to really reflect on the work TLC is doing. We are not just saving babies, we are not just looking after them …What we are doing is changing the world!
Really and truly, every little life we can bring home is a commitment to the world to say “This one we can set on the road to success.”
With the help of our partners, our friends, our community and our government we are creating the momentum for goodness to overcome. Of course it’s hard work, South Africa needs a lot more of us but what we do MATTERS. Every life saved has the potential to be a huge part of the solution. That’s what we want to do!
Help us friends!
Join us in this new fresh phase of TLC, let’s keep the momentum going.
800 babies in 23 years is amazing … how many more could we reach with the right support?
Come visit, please. I would love to have a cup of tea … or coffee with you. Let’s reconnect, let us show you what’s happening around here, let us share our passion for saving lives with you!
Finally, keep New Years Eve open on your calendars! TLC will be hosting a Family Fun Carnival on the evening, specially designed for the whole family. There will be things for everyone from your toddler to your grandparents, even two New Year’s countdowns :-) One at 10pm for those who wish to get home early and the traditional midnight countdown too. I promise it’s going to be a night to remember, so hold the date!
Saturday, August 22 our club members, friends, and family adventured out onto the Wisconsin River for a day of canoeing. The weather was great and the sun was shining. I think most of us had a good time and I'm sure we all have our own stories to tell about the day.
A special thanks to Svein Morner for arranging and coordinating the trip. I hope we can continue this fellowship event into the future.

When Gabriela Vessani was 12 years old, her mother took her to stay with friends in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA, for the summer.
“I loved it, so when I heard about Rotary Youth Exchange, I knew that was something I wanted to do,” says Vessani, who is an Interactor from São Paulo.
This year, Vessani participated in the program. Hosted by the Rotary Club of Waterdown, Ontario, Canada, she stayed with four families, one of which included adopted children from different parts of the world.
“They had seven children, and it was crazy for me. But I loved it,” she says. “It was such a unique...
