Entertaining life moments from four of our members: Ed Fink, Cherie Gon, Kevin Moran, and Mary Cobb Dunn. Sounds like our members really enjoyed these stories, so we’ll be looking to do a bit more of this in the future.
As part of the board’s initiative to simplify the Treasurer’s responsibilities and provide more insight into the financial statements, the club’s board of directors approved transitioning QuickBooks Desktop to QuickBooks Online, establishing an audit committee, and hiring Sandy Gruber, a bookkeeper. The bookkeeper’s responsibilities will mainly be to process transactions in QuickBooks, including sending invoices to club members. The treasurer will issue checks, create
the budget and review the financial statements. Sandy works out of her home and also maintains records for other nonprofit organizations so we think she is a good fit for our club. She started training with John Olsen in October. Sandy has served as the administrative office for the Wisconsin Chapter of the Risk Management Association for several years, an organization in which Derek Moehring has been active for many years. She also serves other Midwest chapters of the RMA. Sandy lives in rural Spring Green. We’re hoping she will be able to attend one of our Club meetings in the not-too-distant future, so you will have an opportunity to meet her. Our initial estimate is that Sandy will spend about ten hours per quarter supporting our Club. Her billing rate is $20 per hour, so the estimated cost will be about $800 per year. At the same time, in accordance with the club bylaws, an audit committee was established with Derek Moehring as chair. The audit committee will establish procedures to perform an in-depth review of the books and records. They will have access to QuickBooks and will be able to review activity. With the hiring of a bookkeeper, we wanted to retain control of the cash and bank accounts with a club member.

I am our Club liaison to the Middleton HS Interact Club that we co-sponsor with the Madison West Club. This is a great opportunity for us to plant some Rotary seeds for the future. These kids need and want to volunteer, so please let me know if you have a project they could volunteer for, so we can start helping and building a relationship with this Club.

Check out this month’s Rotarian for an in-depth look at Rotary’s service during WWI. Rotarians also played a significant role in establishing the United Nations after WWII. And, as Mary Van Hout pointed out at Friday’s meeting, the issue includes a series of pointed Letters to the Editor about the undervalued role of women in RI senior leadership.
Members recently received the following email from RI. It bears reprinting in our Bulletin:
Rotary recently learned that scammers have created multiple communication and social media accounts that impersonate RI President Barry Rassin, RI President-elect Mark Maloney, General Secretary John Hewko and perhaps other Rotary leaders. The communication accounts include or involve email, WhatsApp and Viber. The social media accounts have been on LinkedIn, Twitter and Facebook.
These are not authentic Rotary communications. They are phishing and spoofing attempts to obtain money and personal information. The perpetrators may attempt to convince Rotary members to send funds to support alleged Rotary causes.money and personal information. We’re about to be joined by our first Corporate member … Jefferson Middle School. Four teachers and staff from the school will share a membership in our Club. This has been a topic of interest for the Board for years, and we’re glad it’s finally come to pass
