What was your most embarrassing moment as a realtor?
When asked about her most embarrassing moment as a realtor she remembered the key incident.

Once showing a house to a client she extracted the key from the key box hanging on the doorknob.  She confidently jabbed the key into the lock only to have it break off as she turned it.  Turning to the client she said "Gee they didn't teach what to do about this in realtor school."

So what happened??  "We went round the house and in the unlocked backdoor.  Fortunately I only show country homes."

What was your worse moment as a Rotarian?

Mary Feldt was quick to remember being asked to be Sergeant at Arms by then President Otto Cordero.  She was deathly afraid of public speaking but her respect of and encouragement from Otto won the day. The experience helped her overcome that fear and became one of her many, many Rotary high points. Among these are the Calgary International Convention, her Paul Harris award, Guatemala trips and bringing so many new members into our club.

What was your proudest achievement in school?

Bill Mowbray related that after kicking over the props in an elementary school drama production I pulled. myself together in high school. I was a trumpeter in the school's brass chorus. After playing the same piece for 3 years at the Wisconsin School Music Association Solo & Ensemble contest, we finally won first place with a perfect score.

What was your most memorable moment?

Answer: "I loved theater and getting to play one of the leads in Look Homeward Angel was the high point.”

Background info: There were two female leads in the play, Eliza the old mother nag of the protagonist or his beautiful young love interest, Laura.  You know which one Mary played!!

P.S.  There is much more to this story just ask her.

The Best Show at Rotary

Primma Prayoonwongsa (Best) is our 16-year-old inbound Rotary Exchange Student from the Chumpae Rotary Club in northeastern Thailand. He’s been with us since August, attending Middleton High School. His home high school -- Khon Kaen -- has 5,000 students. The city itself has 113,000 residents.

His presentation focused on his homeland -- Thailand has a population of 67 million, largely Buddhist. The country has a distinctive culture in southeast Asia. Their long-reigning king, Bhumibol Adulyadej, passed away in October. He been on the throne 70 years.

Best is a soccer player, a drummer, and someone who’s continually asked ‘How do you like Wisconsin winter?’ In a word, he doesn’t. This was his first time confronting snow and cold temperatures.

Maha McDiarmid, of Mooseheart, is in Guatemala

As you will recall Maha McDiarmid, of Mooseheart, is in Guatemala teaching their positive model of care at the Madre Anna Vitello Orphanage. Her presence there is under the auspices of the Orphan Train Project, with funding by the Madison West Towne-Middleton Rotary Foundation, Inc. Maha is traveling with Heart to Heart Experiences, a Madison based 501 (c) (3), which is building houses and bunk beds for a community near the orphanage. Heart to Heart is also building bunk beds at the orphanage. Some of the bunk beds being constructed at the children's home were paid for with a donation to our Rotary Foundation and by Cheryl and Tom Retzlaff of Monona Grove.

Of Maha McDiarmid, Mark Landgraf, of Heart to Heart, wrote to his wife Sue the following: "...Unbelievable. What a great person. Wait until you meet her and hear what they (Mooseheart) will try to accomplish..." In another message to his wife, Mark wrote:  "Please tell Ed that Maha is a blessing to the orphanage and Catholic Sisters. She is a gift."

Members should check out the Facebook page for Heart to Heart Experiences.
Thanks to our friends at Mooseheart for continuing to work with us. You also are a gift to the world.

Rotary Foundation named World's Outstanding Foundation for 2016

The Association of Fundraising Professionals has recognized The Rotary Foundation with its annual Award for Outstanding Foundation.

The award honors organizations that show philanthropic commitment and leadership through financial support, innovation, encouragement of others, and involvement in public affairs. Some of the boldest names in American giving — Kellogg, Komen, and MacArthur, among others —are past honorees.
