Welcome New Member Cherie Gon

WELCOME Cherie Gon!!

On Friday, April 1st, Cherie Gon was inducted as the newest member of the Rotary Club of Madison West Towne-Middleton. Cherie is a financial advisor with Edward Jones as well as a proclaimed Minnesota Vikings Fan (Mary Beth was overjoyed). The Board of Directors had approved Cherie’s membership application at their March meeting. President Derek Moehring welcomed Cherie to our Club and encouraged her to:
  • Be an Active Member of The Club
  • Help the Club Grow Its Membership
  • Assist Her Community through Service
Jack Ferreri presented Cherie with her Rotary lapel pin and warned her of the consequences of not wearing it to every club meeting ($$$). Finally, Derek presented Cherie with her Red Badge. Derek informed Cherie that there are a number of tasks that she must complete in order to earn her Blue Badge, but informed her that she would have a lot of help. That is when Derek asked all Club members to stand and take the following oath:

Each Club Members Would Do Everything In Their Power To:
  • Warmly welcome Cherie into our Club
  • Personally get to know Cheri and invite her participate with them in a service project or fundraiser
  • Help Cherie to get to know the In’s and Outs of our Rotary Club and Rotary International
  • Check in on Cheri periodically to see how she is doing and to see if they can be of any assistance
  • Help Cheri to earn her Blue Badge in record time
If you were not at the April 1st meeting, Derek is asking you to take this oath to commit to helping Cherie.

Speaker Recap Apr 1, 2016

Katie Hensel & Tri 4 Schools

Katie Hensel is the firecracker founder of Tri 4 Schools, a non-profit that partners with schools to stage fun events to get kids physically active. The organization sends the money from events back to the schools, with over 200 receiving money since the group's founding in 2011. Kids of all ages do scaled-down runs, walks, obstacle courses, haunted hustles ... and even a mud run. It gets kids to appreciate the pleasure of physical activity in a group setting, in a great fun environment. Tri 4 Schools has been named one of the ten best ideas to end childhood obesity by the Partnership for a Healthier America.

2016-2017 Rotary Grant Information
Our Club has completed and filed the Memoranda of Understanding and met the requirements to apply for grants for the 2016-2017 Rotary year.  The Madison West Towne-Middleton Rotary Club requires all request for 2016-2017 funds to be submitted to Ruth Domack, Club Secretary, by May 15th.  This means that you need to submit a Request for Project Support by May 15th, whether you are asking for money only from the Club, money from the District and the Club, or money from the Rotary Foundation, the District and the Club no later than May 15th.  The reason for this date is that it allows the club to determine the 2016-2017 budget in a timely matter.

If you are asking for less than $5,000, this usually requires funds from the Club only.  If you are asking for over $5,000 up to $30,000, this is usually a District Grant.  If your project is over $30,000 this is usually a Global Grant with funds from the Rotary Foundation, the District and the Club.

If you would like to work on your grant and would like my help, we can set up a workshop for this purpose.  Please let me know.  The District will assign you a mentor if you are applying for a Global Grant.

To access the form to submit, go to mwt-mrotaryclub.org, and scroll down to Home Page Download Files on the left side of the website. Select Request for Project Support, and fill in the information.

If you are only asking for money from the Club, the dollar amount requested is the total cost of the project.

If you are applying for a District Grant, you would state that you want $___ from the Club and $____ from the District.  The District will match Club dollars, dollar for dollar (for example, $5,000 Club funds and $5,000 District funds).  The maximum that the District will give a Club is $5,000 per project.  If you can find 2 other clubs willing to support the project, the District will give up to $14,500.  However, when a project gets close to a total of $30,000, the District will strongly encourage you to make it a $30,000 so you can apply for a Global Grant.  When you apply for a District Grant you need to complete the Club Request for Project Support and the District Grant Request.

If you are applying for a Global Grant, you will state that you want $____ from the Club, $____ from the District and $____ from the Rotary Foundation.  The District will match the Club portion dollar for dollar, and the Rotary Foundation will match the Club funds at $0.50 on the dollar and the District Funds dollar for dollars.  As an example, Club contributes $8,700, District contributes $8,700 and the Rotary Foundation contributes $13,050, for a total project cost of $30,450.  You need to complete the Club Request for Project support and the Rotary Foundation grant application.

If it would be helpful, I can furnish you with these blank forms and with a sample completed forms.

I know this is a lot of paperwork, but it is a wonderful way to get the most money for a project.  It reduces the amount of money we need to raise through Club fund raising activities.

News from Rotary International
Representatives from Rotary clubs worldwide will gather in Chicago 10-15 April to consider changes to the policies that guide Rotary International and its member clubs. The Council on Legislation meets every three years and is an essential part of Rotary's governance. The representatives -- one from each Rotary district -- review and vote on proposals that seek to change Rotary's constitutional documents and on resolutions that express an opinion or make a recommendation to the Rotary International Board of Directors. Get live updates and daily vote totals on My Rotary beginning 11 April....

From the April 2016 issue of The Rotarian There is a new ritual in American life. It goes like this: Whenever you invite someone to dinner, you must inquire about any special dietary needs. Because today, it seems that nearly everyone has drawn a line around foods that cannot pass their lips. This could be because of allergies, moral qualms, lifestyle choices, health issues, or simple preference. The person might be a vegetarian who eats fish, a carnivore who hates carbs, a glutton who avoids gluten, or a time bomb waiting to be set off by a nut. (Asking ahead makes for a more pleasant...

From the April 2016 issue of The Rotarian Do you need some context for all you’re experiencing while you’re in Korea for the Rotary International Convention from 28 May to 1 June? Check out one or more of these museums: 1. National Museum of Korea: If you have time for only one, this museum, the sixth largest in the world, has something for everyone: relics from prehistoric times, calligraphy, paintings, sculpture, and even a children’s museum, all housed in a six-story building in the wooded Yongsan Family Park. 2.
