Thom Weiss from the Madison Breakfast Club spoke to us about his Club’s role in collecting used books for dispatch overseas. A Houston Rotary Club originated the program and manages it today. But Madison Breakfast plays a significant role in gathering books, packing them, and shipping them to Houston. They had sixteen packing sessions in 2017; our Club participated in filling boxes with donated books. Books come from libraries and schools. They’re mostly math, science, and kids’ books, with some fiction.
The program started in 2000, when two Rotarians – one from Texas and one from South Africa – met at a Rotary Conference. The project was soon born, given that the U.S. is awash in used books and the need in South Africa is great. Wisconsin joined the project in 2007. Last year Wisconsin sent seven semis loaded with 5,847 boxes of books (and desks) on 126 pallets to Texas for shipment overseas to South Africa and many other places around the globe – Central and South America, India, Afghanistan, and Pakistan.
The success of the Golf Outing Silent Auction is dependent on member donations or solicitations of businesses for most any products. This week we’d like to suggest gift cards from a variety of businesses: Nevada Bob’s, restaurants, hotels, spas, bars, hair salons, barbershops, nail shops for manicures or pedicures, Best Buy, Knoche Meat Market, Trader Joe’s, Steve’s Liquors, Total Wine Store. We will accept gift cards that you purchase or given to you by businesses.

You now have another way to purchase Raffle Tickets at our weekly Rotary meetings. The Club has printed some $20 Prepaid Punch Cards which members can purchase and use each week instead of buying raffle tickets for cash each time.
The Assistant Treasurers will sell the cards at the Registration Desk each week, either for cash or check. You can then present the card to the Ticket Sellers, who will punch the card for how much you want to spend – 1 punch for 1 Raffle Ticket, or 2 punches for 3 Raffle Tickets. You keep the card in your wallet or purse until 20 punches are done, and then you can buy another card. You will still be able to purchase the Raffle Tickets for cash as well.
Mary Dunn is moving away from Wisconsin and will not be able to continue performing these volunteer tasks. Volunteers are needed to take over the responsibilities as described below.
Please contact Mary Dunn if you are interested in attending an information session to learn more. We will plan and schedule individual training at that session.
RYLA – Rotary Youth Leadership Awards takes place May 18 – 20 at Upham Woods near Wisconsin Dells. Madison West Towne-Middleton Rotary will again be providing Saturday’s lunch for the approximately 150 participants and leaders. If you are interested and available on May 19th to help prepare and serve lunch, please contact Mary Van Hout at maryevanhout@gmail.com. It’s a great way to enjoy fellowship with the students and Club Rotarians.
Our own John Gerold (Bingo Czar) leads a group of volunteers to run bingo games at Oakwood Village – University Woods at 6 – 7:30 pm the third Thursday every month from October through May.
Sign up on the pass around sheet during Friday meetings.
John will send a reminder and logistical information to each volunteer ahead of each session. This activity also qualifies for a meeting make-up, if one is needed.
Please let me know of any events or special situations in our fellow Rotarians' lives where a card, flowers, or a plant would be appropriate for their situation.
