Will Harris, Rotary World Peace Fellowship alumnus, enlightened us on Capital for Communities Fund (WCCN). Will studied in Nicaragua for two years while working on his masters degree in international relations and peace studies. He traveled Latin America interviewing bank presidents about micro-financing.
Upon returning to Madison, will got involved in a non-profit group started in 1984: Capital For Communities Fund. They find investors willing to make Latin America "micro finance" small business loans to someone who has nothing. This gives working poor people a chance to build a business. It's turned out to be a "panacea for poverty alleviation." 400 USA investors --- individuals, religious organizations and foundations --- give loans to women and men in six Latin American countries.
Many businesses are run out of the home, so a loan could buy new, energy efficient stove to bake more tortillas and eliminate smoke danger for the inhabitants.
Investors earn interest rates from zero to 4.25% and make a positive impact! www.wccn.org
You may recall our Club switched billing last year to members paying only for meals consumed from paying for all meals, whether you showed up or not. We monitored how this change was going to impact the Club budget. It turns out we were coming up a little short and were having to make up the difference from the existing club accounts. We trimmed down the budget to lessen the budget impact, but we're still not meeting budget requirements.
Your Board is proposing an increase in Club dues for the July 2017 - June 2018 Rotary year.
Rotary International fees increased from $79 to $83 this year.
District 6250 dues remained the same at $40 annually.
Club dues are increasing to $133 from $117.
So your total annual dues will be $256 ($64 per quarter): $133 for the Club, $40 for the District, $83 for Rotary International. And you'll pay for your meals, of course. This will resolve the budget impact of switching how we account for meals. We know dues are a sensitive issue, but you are, after all, only paying for the meals you eat, not the ones you miss.
On October 20th we will have a Club Assembly where we'll review the budget for all members.
”Hurricane Harvey has devastated parts of Texas and Louisiana. And Rotarians have a deep and lasting commitment of service. At the September 8 meeting, we'll be asking members to write a check to help the victims of Harvey. The Club will aggregate the contributions, add some funds from the Club budget, and make a Harvey-delineated donation to the Rotary District 6250 Charitable Trust. You've seen the visuals, you've read the stories. Help our Club on September 8 and 15 help those who are suffering.
Please note that in last week’s Bulletin, it was stated that funds collected would be donated to the American Red Cross. Subsequently, we have learned about the Rotary Clubs in the affected parts of Texas have started collecting funds also, for the relief efforts. Funds designated for Harvey relief and collected by Rotary District 6250, will be sent to the Rotary District(s) heading the relief efforts in Texas and affected areas. 100% of your contribution will go to those that truly need it. Contributions to the Rotary District 6250 Charitable Trustare fully tax deductible. If donating by check, please note on the Memo line “HHRF”.”
Wednesday night (September 13) 8 Rotary members helped serve food to a very large and nice gathering of the Jefferson Middle School Families and Students. The school staff prepared hot dogs, families donated cookies, potato salad, cheese and crackers, apples and chips. There was also popcorn. Our Club had a display table and engaged with teachers and parents throughout the evening. We all had a great time.
On Friday, September 22, 2017, from 5:30 - 7:30 PM, the Lussier Community Education Center is celebrating the first year of the launch of their radio station WWMV 95.5FM. There will be live music, great food, entertainment and more! ALL ARE WELCOME! The Rotary Club supports the Center in different ways including this year donating $1,000 and getting a District Matching Grant of $1,000, for a total of $2,000. The funds will be used to purchase remote broadcasting equipment and printing publicity brochures. It is our intent this year to get Rotarians involved with the radio operations and have some broadcasts involving Rotarians.
Lussier is located at 55 S. Gammon Road, Madison, next to Jefferson Middle School. WWMV-LP's on-air broadcasts will reach outward 10 miles in all directions. Most of WWMV-LP's programs will also be posted online at wwmvlp.org.
Lets support the radio station and center by having a nice turn-out of Rotarians at the open house. Come and see what your investment is doing.

Greetings from Copenhagen!
Yes, indeed, I am the happy mother of little baby Storm. He was born August 20th and a happy and hungry little fella. Along with father Johannes and Storm's 3 'bonus siblings' (Johannes' kids from a previous marriage) we are all thrilled!!
The District 6250 Board has agreed to allocate $5000 for these membership grants. This is a new endeavor that, if successful, will help grow our clubs and expand our reach.
The first 5 clubs to recruit four or more new members between July 1, 2017 and April 30, 2018 will be eligible for a $1000 grant for these new members to use for a project of their own. These members must remain for 4 months for the club to be eligible. Once you have met this criteria, please contact one of our membership co-chairs.
Please let me know of any events or special situations in our fellow Rotarians' lives where a card, flowers, or a plant would be appropriate for their situation.
Rotarians are people of action and our Rotary Foundation has always transformed your gifts into service projects that change lives both close to home and around the world. When you donate to our Rotary Foundation your gift makes a difference to those who need help the most. More than 90% of funds donated go directly to supporting our chosen projects around the world.
To commemorate the 100th anniversary of our Rotary Foundation, our District has set a goal of raising $1 million in new major contributions ($10,000 or more) and bequests. For many Rotarians, a commitment of this magnitude may require some thoughtful consideration and planning, hence the “Journey” description.
A bequest is simply a promise to leave a gift upon your or your and your partner’s passing. Setting up a bequest is oftentimes done with the assistance of an attorney but signing up to be a part of our Bequest Society is as simple as filling out a short form. Once your intention has been shared with our Rotary Foundation, you will be recognized with a personally engraved crystal display piece and a special pin and/or pendant. Couples may be recognized jointly. As of today, our district has 40 Bequest Society members.
A major gift can be made in one or multiple payments over the course of three years (with as few as 3 -$3,333.34 or as many as 36 - $277.78 installments). For those wishing to take advantage of extended payments, a personalized pledge form would be drafted and upon making the initial payment, Major Donor status would be received. Major Donor recognition includes a personally engraved crystal and a special pin and/or pendant. Couples may be recognized jointly. As of today, 68 of our district’s Rotarians have achieved Major Donor status.
In celebration of reaching our goal, an intimate dinner will be held for all who have made a new major gift or bequest or have increased an existing bequest by $10,000 or more. This celebration will be held on Saturday, November 4, 2017 at Trappers Turn Golf Course in Wisconsin Dells. Those who attend will be treated to an exclusive and intimate dinner including fellowship and a special keynote address by Rotary International General Secretary John Hewko. This event is unlike any we’ve ever hosted.
For additional information on being a part of this historic effort, please contact District Rotary Foundation Committee Chair David Warren or Rotary Foundation Major Gifts Officer Rachel Greenhoe. The time to take action is now. Your gift can truly change or even save a life. Thank you for your generosity and commitment to our Rotary foundation!
If you are volunteering with youth (one-on-one)? Mentoring, Youth Exchange, RYLA, Academic Decathlon, High School Business Plans, Etc... You must have an annual background check completed. This only applies if you are working with youth one-on-one. If you are in a group more than 2 people, you don't need a background check.
