Peter is a popular motivational speaker, musician and theatre person who spends much of his time working with people with disabilities. He shared with us some tips from his improvisational background.
In improvisation, you start with a single idea. Your partner then builds off your idea (accepts your offer) with a ‘Yes, and’ followup. No blocking or discarding of a previous idea. You want to make your partners look good, and it’s great practice in listening skills. You can’t let your mind wander, and every idea is valid. No roadblocks leads to lots of ideas.
This concept of validating of ideas and their development through a sequence is one way to boost morale in any organization. It simply makes work more fun. We closed with a brainstorming exercise on helping an American Sign Language teachers find kids interested in learning ASL.
