High School Summer Exchange

Applications are being accepted through February 1, 2019 for the upcoming Summer High School Exchange program. The Rotary Short Term Exchange Program, known as STEP, is a Family-to-Family exchange for students ages 15 to 18. This is a great program for students not interested in our one-year exchange program.

Students submit their application indicating their top 3 country choices and a match is established with an international family.  The U.S. student spends 3-5 weeks abroad with their host family. During the same summer, the U.S. student hosts his/her brother/sister in the U.S.  Exact dates are determined by the two families.  There is no academic component to this exchange. Some of the countries available in the Rotary STEP: Brazil, Czech Republic, Ecuador, France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland. For more detailed information, go to  www.rotary6260.org/STEP or email: Rotary6250.summerexchange@gmail.com / 608-577-6395, coordinator Janine O’Rourke

Calling All Projects: Undesignated Funds

At our November foundation board of directors meeting we reviewed our funding and commitments. For fiscal year 2018-2019, we funded all approved projects and still had a total of $5,635 available. In one instance we did not receive a district matching grant for Jefferson Middle School.  Further, we did not have approved projects to use all the community service funding.  Due to high demand, all district matching grant funds have been committed already.  In keeping with our mission, we would like to find a way to best utilize these undesignated funds.

We will accept applications for such undesignated funds no later than December 31, 2018.  If anyone from the club has a project that requires funding, they should complete the Undesignated Funds Request (available on Club Runner) and submit it to the appropriate Avenue of Service Chair as follows:
  • Community – Kevin Welton
  • International – Steve Aune
  • Vocational – Roxanne Brazeau
All funding requests will be reviewed by the chair, who will make final recommendations to the board of directors.  The board will review all recommended projects and vote to approve any such projects at the regularly scheduled board meeting January 15, 2019.  Applicants will be notified of the board decision shortly thereafter.  If you have any questions, contact Matt Loch at matthew.loch@tdsmetro.com.

Doing Rotary Makeups

If you’re unable to make a Club meeting, but want to keep your attendance up, there are several easy ways to do this:
Simply go a meeting at another Club within two weeks (before or after) your missed meeting at our Club. Fill out the paperwork when you attend that meeting, and then send our Secretary an email … or enter it yourself in ClubRunner. Here’s a list of area Clubs and meeting times:
Go online to rotaryeclubone.org and spend an hour or so reviewing articles or watching videos about Rotary programs. You can then click a few buttons to submit that as a makeup for your missed meeting.

Take on a volunteer commitment or attend a Club meeting other than the normal Friday meeting. Working Oakwood Bingo, sitting in a Board or committee meeting, helping out at a food pantry, pitching in with Middleton HS Interact Club, getting dirty with Adopt-a-Highway – all those efforts count as a makeup. You can enter the makeup online or send the Secretary an email.

Items for the Bulletin

If you have something you think should go into our weekly Bulletin, please send it to me at the email address on top of this Bulletin. Please include the phrase ‘FOR THE BULLETIN’ in your subject line.

Wrap up for Pigskin Payoff

  • Regular participants need to pay $56. We had 13 Club members opt to ‘double-commit’ their dollars, so they pay $112.
  • The closest guess to total points was Cherie Gon @ 375, so she’ll half her amount: $28.
  • No one will be billed: you have to pass along a check at the next meeting or mail it to our PO Box in Middleton (see the bottom of this Bulletin).
  • Assuming we ain’t got us no deadbeats or ne’er-do-wells, Pigskin Payoff will net the Club $3,332.
  • Finally, part of the PP was garnering some non-perishable foodstuffs for one of our food pantries.
  • For every game the Badgers won by 20, participants would bring in 1 item at the end of the season. The Badgers won two games by at least twenty, so each PP player should bring in two non-perishable items.  Bring them at the Dec 14 meeting!
  • Thanks to all the members that put their wallets on the line to raise money for the Club!
  • If you missed paying up (and bringing non-perishables) at the Dec 14 meeting, bring them to the next meeting. YOU WILL BE HUNTED DOWN!

Other Items

  • If anyone has current emails for Jerry Smith and Dick Meister, please pass them along to me. My Bulletin emails to them are not getting through.
  • Adam Schaller has submitted his resignation from the Club on Dec 17. Adam is taking on a volunteer commitment with the American Family Children’s Hospital, and with a young family and a full-time job, he can’t keep up his Rotary obligations. We will miss him.
  • Our incoming slate of officers, starting July 1:
  • President Dawn Frank
  • President-Elect Steve Aune
  • President-Elect Nominee Ruth Domack
  • Secretary Jack Ferreri
  • Treasurer Rich Cooper
  • Sergeant-at-Arms Jeannine Desautels
  • Club Service Year 2 Mary Ruth Marks
  • Club Service Year 1 Kevin Moran
  • Community Service Year 2 Patrick Rees
  • Community Service Year 1 Barry Pace
  • International Service Year 2 Dick Murray
  • International Service Year 1 Sundar Baladhandapani
  • Vocational Service Year 2 Deb Dieter
  • Vocational Service Year 1 Dennis Zitnak
  • Our April 26th meeting will be a luncheon at Jefferson Middle School. Many of our members have supported Club activities on behalf of JMS. Now we get to enjoy lunch there and see the facility.
  • Note that the Minutes from our November Board Meeting are attached to this Bulletin email. Review them and look behind the scenes on how your Club works its magic.

Adopt-A-Cot (from Ed Fink and Orphan Train)

Welcome to 'Team Astrid' all our new Adopt-A-Cot supporters! To all our Adopt-A-Cot supporters, old and new, we would like to extend heartfelt thanks for championing our cause. We wish you a peaceful, blessed festive season from all of us at TLC Children's Home. To give you a bit more background into the Adopt-A-Cot program, you are part of a team of sponsors funding this cot. Together, your donations cover the costs of nappies, food, formula and medical expenses for this child in particular, and also contribute towards the other costs of running a children's home, such as electricity, water, education, salaries for permanent caregivers and petrol for lifts, to name a few. We are so incredibly grateful to have you on board. Because of you, Astrid is able to live in a loving environment, in spite of a difficult start.

Note this is a program in South Africa we’ve helped along with staff training and funding.
