This Week’s Speaker:

Michael Mucha of the Madison Metropolitan Sewer District

Michael Mucha of the Madison Metropolitan Sewer District will speak to us on the district’s efforts to recycle water and reclaim resources to concerns over how we can best maintain our infrastructure and prepare for future large storm events.

Last Week’s Speaker: Paul Patenaude on His Trip to the Holy Land

Member Paul Patenaude gave us a rebroadcast of his talk of a few months ago on his tour of the Holy Land. We had technical issues last time, but this time we had full visuals. He walked us through the various hiking routes he took, the rich agricultural lands, the barren spaces, and the rich archaeological sites which were a primary interest to him. He also spoke admiringly of the people he met on his trip. He made this presentation originally a couple of months ago, but our computer was under lock and key … some kind of hostage situation apparently. Well, we had the computer, we had the projector, and Paul reprised his presentation with a collection of slides from his journey.

Pigskin Payoff Club Fundraiser

We have a replacement for the Meister Meter. Here's how the Pigskin Payoff works:

1) Members who opt in commit to paying $1 for each TD and $1 for each interception by the Badgers this season, not counting any Bowl games. Last year, they had 54 TDs and 22 interceptions.

2) Members who opt out pay $50.

3) Billing for both opt-ins and opt-outs will take place at the end of the season.

4) Just to Meister things up a bit ... when you sign up to participate, you get to make a guess on the total number of points scored by the Badgers in the regular season plus Big Ten. Last year, it was 473. Closest guess gets his/her contribution halved.

5) Another Meisterization ... for each game the Badgers win by 20 points or more, participants bring in a non-perishable food item. We're not going to track participants on this ... we'll just guilt them a bit. But items will go to needy families. Last year the Badgers won 7 games by 20 points or more. These items will also be collected at the end of the year.

We had great signups last week, including a dozen or so members who opted to DOUBLE their pledge. The Pigskin Payoff crew will be making the rounds at this meeting to round up those who missed the last meeting.

Help us grow back the income we lost with the demise of the Meister Meter. Supply your own advanced mathematics!

Membership

Please take a moment to say hello to new member Kevin Moran. He joined the world’s coolest Rotary Club on August 10, 2018.We’re about to be joined by our first Corporate member … Jefferson Middle School. Four teachers and staff from the school will share a membership in our Club. This has been a topic of interest for the Board for years, and we’re glad it’s finally come to pass.
Ginny Jenkins has submitted her resignation from the Club. Too much work in her life right now to stay involved with the Club. Her departure is a loss for us all.

The Orphan Train Keeps on Traveling

Last year, our club's Foundation received two donations earmarked for the Orphan Train. As a result, we were able to pay for an online Montessori course for Ellen Ambraal, who was raised at TLC Children's Home in South Africa and now works there. It is a three-part course. Ellen has now completed the second component of the program, and received top marks, as she did with the first phase.

Biking for Boys and Girls Club

We bike along with hundreds to raise $ for the Boys and Girls Club of Dane County. Our Rotary Club of Madison West Towne-Middleton team is only 3 strong, but other Rotarians made donations.

Rotarian Jerry McAdow organized a Boardman Clark team that we saw often on our 28-mile jaunt. Absolutely lovely Saturday bike ride starting/ending at McKee Farm Farm Park in Fitchburg.
