The 50th Annual Madison Area Service Clubs Luncheon was held October 9th at the Alliant Energy Center. A total of 305 area Service Club members and guests participated in a special tribute to Veterans. The program included providing special pins for the attending Veterans, singing of the National Anthem and America the Beautiful, as well as reciting the Pledge of Allegiance.
Following the lunch, presentations were made to the 2013 Ruth Gordon Service Award recipient Ron Phelps, and the 2013 Community Youth Volunteer Award recipient Tom Grantham. Mr. Phelps is a member and current President of the Rotary Club of Madison Horizons, he is a decorated veteran having served in Operation Desert Sheild/ Desert Storm, and currently mentors Veterans through ACP. Mr. Grantham has been a member of the Rotary Club of Madison Downtown since 1981, has guided literally thousands of young athletes at the Pop Warner, High School and College level as a football referee for over 30 years. He is he co-founder of the Crazylegs Classic, past President of the Edgewood Athletic Association, and board member of the UW Alumm Association.
Following these presentations, we heard a very emotional program from Brian Ziegler, President of the Badger Honor Flight. Conceived in 2004 the Honor Flight has taken over 100,000 Veterans on flights to Washington D. C. to visit the memorials erected in their honor. The first Badger Honor Flight took place in April 2010. The picture above was taken of the Veterans in attendace at the luncheon, those wearing the red jackets and caps have attended an Honor Flight.
Just to let you know that I very much enjoyed the meeting today. Met quite a few of your members and enjoyed having a "yak" with them. North Balwyn Rotary Club of 9800 has 85 members, meets Thursday 6:00 to 6:30 pm. North Balwyn is a suburb of Melbourne (12 miles from the CBD). We are known in the district as club with a high level of fellowship (fun) and very active in local, national and international projects. The theme for the year is World Understanding and Peace.
This competition is open to all Rotarians, Anns, Annets, Rotaractors and Interactors from across Rotary world. The winners will be invited to India for 5 days and will get involved in various informative and cultural activities.
