Are volunteering with youth (one-on-one)? Mentoring, Youth Exchange, RYLA, Academic Decathlon, High School Business Plans, Etc...
If YES, you need to have an annual background check completed. CLICK HERE for more details about how to get your background check completed. This only applies if you are working with youth one-on-one. If you are in a group more than 2 people, you don't need a background check.
Mick Faulhaber is our Youth Protection Officer for our Club. Contact him if you have any questions or concerns.
Eric Knepp, Superintendent, Madison Parks Division
We learned that Madison is a national leader in public parks, with 92% of Madisonians living with a quarter-mile of a park. The division has 279 park properties and a budget of $17.8 million plus a varying capital budget.
We're a northern city with a unique commitment to the outdoors. Parks are more than just green spaces ... they boost real estate value, they improve the environment, and they're a place to help us all to find a healing sanctuary in busy times. It's in parks that many kids first build a connection with the natural world.
Completed Requests For Project Support are due to Ruth Domack, Club Secretary, by May 15, 2016. They will NOT be accepted after that date. It is important to get these forms in by the deadline so that the Board has sufficient time to prepare the Budget for Fiscal Year 2016 – 2017.

The Rotary Club of Madison West Towne-Middleton is sponsoring a high-school aged boy from Thailand. He will arrive in Madison in August, 2016 and is very excited to experience American culture.
His host families need to live in or near the Middleton School District as he will be attending Middleton High School. If you or someone you know may be interested in hosting him for 3-4 months, please contact us.
Hosting is a wonderful experience!

Our Club has been approved to apply for grants for the 2016-2017 Rotary year. All requests should be submitted to Ruth Domack, Club Secretary, by May 15th.
This means that you need to submit a Request for Project Support (link can be found in Derek’s article above) by May 15th, whether you are asking for money only from the Club, money from the District and the Club, or money from the Rotary Foundation, the District and the Club. This allows the club to determine the 2016-2017 budget in a timely matter.
If you are asking for less than $5,000, this usually requires funds from the Club only. If you are asking for over $5,000 up to $30,000, this is usually a District Grant. If your project is over $30,000 this is usually a Global Grant with funds from the Rotary Foundation, the District and the Club.
If you would like to work on your grant and would like my help, we can set up a workshop for this purpose. Please let me know. The District will assign you a mentor if you are applying for a Global Grant.
If you are only asking for money from the Club, the dollar amount requested is the total cost of the project.
If you are applying for a District Grant, you would state that you want $___ from the Club and $____ from the District. The District will match Club dollars, dollar for dollar (for example, $5,000 Club funds and $5,000 District funds). The maximum that the District will give a Club is $5,000 per project. If you can find 2 other clubs willing to support the project, the District will give up to $14,500. However, when a project gets close to a total of $30,000, the District will strongly encourage you to make it a $30,000 so you can apply for a Global Grant. When you apply for a District Grant you need to complete the Club Request for Project Support and the District Grant Request.
If you are applying for a Global Grant, you will state that you want $____ from the Club, $____ from the District and $____ from the Rotary Foundation. The District will match the Club portion dollar for dollar, and the Rotary Foundation will match the Club funds at $0.50 on the dollar and the District Funds dollar for dollars. As an example, Club contributes $8,700, District contributes $8,700 and the Rotary Foundation contributes $13,050, for a total project cost of $30,450. You need to complete the Club Request for Project support and the Rotary Foundation grant application.
If it would be helpful, I can furnish you with these blank forms and with a sample completed forms.
I know this is a lot of paperwork, but it is a wonderful way to get the most money for a project. It reduces the amount of money we need to raise through Club fund raising activities.

Thousands of Rotary members, motivated by a special invitation from Pope Francis, gathered at the Vatican in Rome on Saturday to celebrate a message of compassion, inclusiveness, and service to humanity.
At midmorning, the group -- numbering some 9,000 members from 80 countries -- made its way through the congested streets of Rome, past the tight security surrounding St. Peter's Square, and settled into the area reserved for Rotary in front of St. Peter's Basilica for the Jubilee audience.
Francis, a 79-year-old Argentine, urged the crowd of more than 100,000, which included members of the...
From the May 2016 issue of The Rotarian
If there is one absolute truth about millennials, it is this: Anyone who says there is an absolute truth about millennials risks being subjected to their collective eye roll.
Millennials are individuals, and fiercely so. According to the Pew Research Center, most of them don’t even like being called “millennials,” let alone hearing generalizations about their shared attitudes and behaviors.
Case in point: Christa Papavasiliou, 31, recoils at the notion that older folks see her generation as a bunch of selfie-snapping smartphone addicts. “I’m the...
Editor's note: After the May 2016 issue of The Rotarian went to press, we were saddened to learn of the death of Garvin Evans, who along with his son, U2 guitarist The Edge, appeared on the cover of that issue. Evans was a longtime member of the Rotary Club of Dublin North. We are grateful that we were able to share his remarkable story with our readers.

The boys of U2 are home. It’s Friday, 27 November, two weeks after the terrorist attacks in Paris. Bono, The Edge, Adam Clayton, and Larry Mullen Jr. had been in Paris that terrible evening, rehearsing at the venue where they were...
