This Week’s Speaker:
Dr. Kyle Nye, of the Project Wellness Company, on Health and Wellness

Dr. Nye writes and speaks to motivate people to become a healthier version of themselves. Originally from South Dakota, Dr. Kyle understands the importance of keeping your body and health in top functioning condition. He has a chiropractic clinic on the west side of Madison.

Last Week’s Speaker: Chief Engineer and Director Michael Mucha of the Madison Metropolitan Sewerage District

Almost all the water in Dane County goes through the MMSD’s Nine Springs facility. It’s one of the most modern facilities around, drawing a constant stream of visitors from around the world. The facility handles 40 million gallons of wastewater a day. In some ways, it’s a simple system, using gravity and microorganisms to purify the water, without the use of chemical agents. Most of the treated water leaving the plant is pumped through a five-mile underground pipeline and discharged into Badfish Creek, which diverts it around the Madison Lakes.  Some is also sent to Badger Mill Creek in order to balance the amount the District takes from the watershed. Much of it returns to the ecosystem, eventually hitting the Mississippi and winding up in the Gulf of Mexico 45 days after release.

Volunteers Needed for Our “Adopt-a-Highway” Project

MWT-M Rotary is scheduled to clean a segment of the beltline between Whitney Way and Gammon Rd., on the south side of the road. Volunteers are to meet in Vitense Golf Course parking lot on October 4th at 4:30 pm. Save this date.
Family, friends (16 years & up) are welcome to join members for this activity. Plan on several hours. Highway clean-up involves walking through tall grass and uneven ground picking up road debris -- “yuck.” You will want to wear good shoes, long pants & work gloves.  Trash bags and safety vests will be provided.
Sign-up sheets will be available at this Friday’s meeting, or contact

Working with Youth in Rotary

In today’s world, working with youth means passing background checks. In working with youth related to Rotary, you can initiate a check on yourself easily by going to rotary6250.org (our District site) and search for Youth Protection. You find a form for submission, policies, and a training guide. Easy to complete and, once you submit, you’ll soon get a review and approval. You’ll need this for working with Interact, RYLA, and for giving students rides to or from meetings.

Pigskin Payoff Club Fundraiser

We have a replacement for the Meister Meter. Here's how the Pigskin Payoff works:

1) Members who opt in commit to paying $1 for each TD and $1 for each interception by the Badgers this season, not counting any Bowl games. Last year, they had 54 TDs and 22 interceptions.

2) Members who opt out pay $50.

3) Billing for both opt-ins and opt-outs will take place at the end of the season.

4) Just to Meister things up a bit ... when you sign up to participate, you get to make a guess on the total number of points scored by the Badgers in the regular season plus Big Ten. Last year, it was 473. Closest guess gets his/her contribution halved.

5) Another Meisterization ... for each game the Badgers win by 20 points or more, participants bring in a non-perishable food item. We're not going to track participants on this ... we'll just guilt them a bit. But items will go to needy families. Last year the Badgers won 7 games by 20 points or more. These items will also be collected at the end of the year.

We had great signups last week, including a dozen or so members who opted to DOUBLE their pledge. The Pigskin Payoff crew will be making the rounds at this meeting to round up those who missed the last meeting.

Help us grow back the income we lost with the demise of the Meister Meter. Supply your own advanced mathematics!

Membership

  • We’re about to be joined by our first Corporate member … Jefferson Middle School. Four teachers and staff from the school will share a membership in our Club. This has been a topic of interest for the Board for years, and we’re glad it’s finally come to pass.
  • Ginny Jenkins has submitted her resignation from the Club. Too much work in her life right now to stay involved with the Club. Her departure is a loss for us all.
  • Greg Blum has taken a leave of absence for a couple of months to referee college football.

Biking for Boys and Girls Club

We bike along with hundreds to raise $ for the Boys and Girls Club of Dane County. Our Rotary Club of Madison West Towne-Middleton team is only 3 strong, but other Rotarians made donations.

Rotarian Jerry McAdow organized a Boardman Clark team that we saw often on our 28-mile jaunt. Absolutely lovely Saturday bike ride starting/ending at McKee Farm Farm Park in Fitchburg.
