Today's Hybrid Meeting

No meeting today: Labor Day Holiday

UPCOMING PROGRAMS:
September 9 - Picnic at the Pope Farm. Don't miss this wonderful program by UW Geologist/Professor Eric Carson (who has talked to us on numerous occasions and may become a member). Eric will talk about the geological formation of the Pope Farm before and after glaciation. You can see it before your very eyes as you gaze out at Lake Mendota. Program by Jim Olmsted
September 16 - Dr. John Barnes, who served as president of Avian Pathologists, will speak about the work repopulating the Northern Bob White Quail to area farmlands whose numbers have dwindled because of changes in agriculture practices. Program by Ed Fink.
September 23 - Though now largely forgotten, UW-Madison chef Carson Gulley was a celebrated figure for his groundbreaking efforts crossing racial barriers as a culinaryinstructor, radio and television celebrity chef and as a pioneer in the local struggle for equal housing. Gulley used his fame to engage in a series of efforts to achieve equal standing in Madison and the state. The story of his life provides examples of the persistent practice of segregation and exclusion that African Americans actively experienced in Wisconsin. His is an important part of the still untold story about African Americans in Madison.
September 30 - Lori Bessler of the Wisconsin Historical Society will talk about the top 5 genealogical collections in the United States and Canada. The staff brings together Services that include workshops, consultations and reference to assist researchers of all levels. Lori, Reference Librarian, will present information on the basics of genealogical research andhighlight the amazing collection you will find at the Wisconsin Historical Society. Program by Jim Olmsted
October 7 - Hearing Loss - The Silent Epidemic. Monique Hammond, a hospital pharmacist who lost her hearing in her left ear, wrote a book called "What Did You Say?" will discuss various aspects of hearing and the stresses that hearing loss creates. She also discusses on how to prevent hearing loss and better ways to cope with it. She has spoken to over 240 Rotary Clubs and had 130 Zoom calls to clubs in the US, Canada, Australia, Scotland and the UK. Many of us in our Rotary Club have hearing disabilities. Program by Kathy Roberg.
October 14 - Our own Dana Monogue, Superintendent of the Middleton School System willdiscuss the upcoming referendum. This will be an on-site luncheon at the brand-new Pope Elementary School, next door to the Pope Farm where we often picnic. Program by Kathy Roberg.
October 21 - President's discretion
October 28 - Bev Davis will attempt to present her program again which was cancelled on June 10. Bev is an author, chaplain and anti-bullying expert has degrees in Master Divinityfrom McCormick Theological Seminary and is a certified Dementia Practitioner. She hasspoken to audiences throughout Wisconsin and the Midwest about anti-bulling from first-hand experience being bullied as a young person growing up in Chicago. Program by Jim Olmsted

Monthly Board Meetings

Our normal Board meeting is on the third Wednesday of the month at noon.

All members are welcome to attend to see how the Club operates. If you let the Secretary (jack46ferreri@gmail.com) know ahead of time, he can send you an agenda. These days, we’re meeting at Kathy Roberg’s Presidential Cabana at (Harbor House Condominium) 802 Harbor House Drive (which is right off Watts Road).

New Member Application!

We’ve received an application from Devalyn Rogers to become a member of our Club with Classification of Educator. She’s sponsored by Jeannine Desautels. The Board has provisionally approved her membership. Bylaws require the prospective member to appear in two issues of the Bulletin before he or she can be inducted.

This is her first appearance (although she’s already attended two meetings).

Take a Minute and Bag us a Speaker

We have openings in early winter we’d like to fill before too long. Interestingtopics make our Club a fun place to visit. Sit down with a notepad and a coffee or adult beverage and think of the people you know … neighbors, friends, co-workers, etc. Surely some of them have interesting hobbies, engaging volunteer work, professional careers, leisure adventures, deep knowledge in some fascinating corridor of human knowledge. Talk to them about the possibility of their speaking to us at MWM Rotary.

Madison West Middleton Has Not One, but Two Book Clubs (maybe more?)

Both have been going for several years and are an enjoyable way to get to know members and share opinions on what you’ve read. We meet evenings, and we share food. To find out more about either of these clubs,

contact Jeannine Desautels (jeanninembd@gmail.com) or

Deb Dieter (debragdieter@gmail.com)

Service Project & Fundraiser

The MWM ROTARY – (Madison West Middleton Rotary) has applied for a $500 grant that we will receive if we have 10 (now I hear 15 – bring your family) people volunteer for the IRONMAN OF WISCONSIN. No, not a lot of money – but a lot of fun at a huge community event … that is all good and fun!!

Jenny Aune (yes, wife of Steve) is in charge of the Run Personal Needs area on the Capitol Square Sunday, September 11th 2022. She describes this job in this way: “This is at the halfway point (13.1miles) of the marathon portion of the race. The athletes drop their bags to us before the race. (04:30–06:30 am) There are opportunities to volunteer early or in the afternoon. In the afternoon we hand them their bag as they run by our station. It’s really fun and inspiring.”

Here is what you need to do to register yourself:

1. Go to https://ironman.volunteerlocal.com/volunteer/?id=61147

2. Scroll down to RUN PERSONAL NEEDS (SUNDAY) CAPITOL SQUARE (or any job – we don’t need to register for same thing)

3. PICK YOUR TIME

4. BE SURE TO REGISTER AS Madison West Middleton Rotary

If you would like me to register you – send me your name.
