First in the nation, Wisconsin public radio started in 1917 right on the UW campus at the foot of Bascom Hill. It aimed to spread the Wisconsin Idea and broad cultural awareness to farmers, to small towns, to all state citizens. Child programming later became another element. Starting with primitive vacuum tube technology, Wisconsin Public Radio eventually became three content networks -- the Ideas Network, the News and Classical Network, and the All Classical Network. WPR has also grown into 34 local stations, 7 regional studios, and a robust digital presence with five websites. Jack Mitchell developed the flagship program "All Things Considered" for National Public Radio (he was NPR’s first employee) before becoming the head of Wisconsin Public Radio, which he led for seventeen years. He now teaches at the UW–Madison School of Journalism and Mass Communication.
Hey MWT-M members - our biggest fund raiser is less than two weeks away and we still need donation items for the Silent Auction.
We could use some electronic items for the "techy". If you don't know what to get, let me know how much you are willing to spend and I will go to Best Buy. The latest gadget is a Nest Wifi Temperature Control for your home. It costs $250 so I'd need a few of you to donate toward it. Once installed, a home owner can control the temperature from his/her smartphone.
Other ideas and items are welcome. The committee will be sorting and assembling on Wednesday, June 21 so please bring your items to Friday's meeting or let me know how I can pick them up.
The proceeds from the silent auction help the many local and international projects that MWT-M supports. Please participate!
A few more items have been donated from our generous members!
Thank you to:
Ginny Jenkins for the gift cards to Benvenuto's, Food Fight and the Potosi Beer Museum.
Kevin Welton for the golf bag and clubs.
Dennis Zitnak for the autographed picure of Steve Stricker.
Jack and Judy Ferreri for the garden consultation certificate along with a $100 certificate to the Flower Factory.
Mary Feldt for two horse back riding lessons (always a treat for the grandkids).
Steve Aune, the golf balls, tees and umbrella
Bill Mowbray, golf tees
Leo Edelstein for the 2 Club Level Milwaukee Brewer tickets.
If you can't think of anything to donate, pick up a Best buy gift card or Costco or REI or Nevada Bob's or Star Cinema or Sundance Movies at Hilldale or Sentry Foods or HyVee.
Please bring your donations Friday. We assemble the baskets on Wednesday, June 21.
Thank you for your donations and all you do for Rotary!!
Seewat Premmaprayoonwongsa, a/k/a Best, left for his home in Thailand early Thursday morning.
He had to return to start his military service obligation.
We had a very nice farewell gathering for him Tuesday evening at his 3rd Host Family’s home. He is pictured with his 3rd Host Mother at the Dane County airport.
Best was a wonderful Exchange Student and wanted to thank everyone for helping him have a very successful exchange year.
Box lunches cost $9 for those volunteers who would like to order a box lunch. Box lunches are available around 9:30am. The afternoon buffet offers enough food so any volunteer who works later in the day is welcome to the buffet at no additional cost.
We need volunteers! Please give a few hours of your time on Monday, June 26. Click Here to Sign Up!!
Thank you everyone for your support surrounding the establishment of a club blood drive with the Red Cross, however for a myriad of reasons we are currently thirteen donors short of the minimum required to reserve an event. At this point I would like to ask that anyone who would like to be a donor who has not reached out to me please do so. I would also like to add that anyone who would like to volunteer their friends, family, or co-workers is encouraged to and they will count towards our total. If we don’t reach the minimum by the middle of next week I will work with the Red Cross to support one of their existing drives.
This is our biggest most important fund raiser of the year and we need everyone to participate in some way. Please let me know if you have not yet become involved and what you will be able to do for the club. Here are the options:

The following is general info from the Sun Flower Days Logistics Meeting. Last year, it was estimated 80,000 people visited the site, thus making it one of the premier summer attractions in the county.
First and most importantly, due to May’s weather, the planting did not go as planned. Thus, Sun Flower Days has been moved to begin Sat. Aug. 12, thru Sunday Aug. 20. We can put these dates in the bulletin and in our screen presentation.
Signups for parking volunteers will be done on-line. This process has not been completed, and we won’t have to collect names etc. at our meetings.
For those who have done this before, there are some changes in procedures for sign-in, wavers, and responsibilities. I see these all as very positive. There must have been 15 supervisor volunteers at the meeting plus a Town of Middleton Officer who gave good guidance to cover the anticipated crowds and traffic problems.
The conservancy will be open from 8:00am until shortly before sun set. Volunteers are to arrive 15 mins early for sign-in and instructions. All these are relatively easy, working in 2 hours shifts except for 10-12:30. There are 6 shift times. ALSO, there will be shade, either natural by trees or portable tents at each parking assignment location There will be 5 locations of them. Water, sun screen, and “treats” will be provided for our volunteers. Our volunteers need to be “animated” in their direction to direct parking. We will also be soliciting memberships to the visitors by passing out PFC brochures as the cars exit the area.
Starting Friday, we can make meeting announcements to begin “seeding” the idea to volunteer. I would expect those who did the highway cleanup would be great candidates for sign-ups.
If you are volunteering with youth (one-on-one)? Mentoring, Youth Exchange, RYLA, Academic Decathlon, High School Business Plans, Etc... You must have an annual background check completed. This only applies if you are working with youth one-on-one. If you are in a group more than 2 people, you don't need a background check.
Please let me know of any events or special situations in our fellow Rotarians' lives where a card, flowers, or a plant would be appropriate for their situation.
