FACTS ABOUT ROTARY VOCATIONAL TRAINING TEAMS

Vocational training teams are groups of professionals who travel abroad either to teach local professionals about a particular field or to learn more about their own. Teams can be funded by district grants and global grants. Benefits of VTTs VTTs build on the Foundation’s long-standing commitment to vocational training. Activities vary from one team to the next but may include training medical professionals on cardiac surgery and care, sharing best practices on early childhood education, or explaining new irrigation techniques to farmers. A successful VTT increases the capacity of the host community to solve problems and improve the quality of life.

DISTRICT 6250 VOCATIONAL TRAINING TEAM

There is a new term in our District 6250 and in the Rotary world of international service-Vocational Training Team, otherwise known as VTT-and it is having a positive impact around the world.

Many terms can be used to describe the VTT program: social justice, social activism, community involvement and community development are a few.  The program can also be described as an opportunity to go out and do good in the world.  The program empowers people to help others to help themselves.

Here are a few examples of VTT teams from our neighboring Rotary District 6420 that have made a difference in the world:

The District sent a team of six people to Guatemala to work at Ak Tenamit, a vocational training school for the indigenous Mayan population.  District 6420 also sent a team of nine people to the Nebbi District in Northwest Uganda to help the community to better serve girls by enabling them to stay in school.  This group was comprised of three physicians, two trauma counselors, two nurses, one teacher and one librarian

The volunteers in both of these VTT experiences, some of whom are Rotarians, engaged in awesome and meaningful work.  They touched the lives of the people with whom they worked and developed numerous meaningful relationships

There are two primary VTT funding sources:  District Designated Funds and a matching Rotary Foundation Global grant.  The cost of one project must be a minimum of $30,000.  Additional resources from a district, club, individual or business may augment the project cost.

A successful grant must fit into the framework of Rotary's area's  of focus; peace and conflict prevention/resolution, disease prevention and treatment, water and sanitation, maternal and child health, basic education and literacy and economic and community development.

This is the first year that District 6250 will be involved with the relatively new Vocational Training Team program.  I am hoping that the above two examples will provide you with some information about what the program is all about.

For more information, please feel free to contact me.

Thank you!

You might notice a new column on the weekly assignments called Rotary Minute.  This is intended to be a quick one minute or less talk about Rotary.  It can be a personal experience that involves Rotary or it can be a "Did you know?" fact.  Be creative with it.  Remember to keep it short and simple.  We will randomly assign members to give a Rotary minute after the recital of the 4-Way Test.

If you cannot attend the meeting you are assigned to, please contact Toni Pabon.

News from Rotary International
According to a 2012 report by UNICEF and the World Health Organization, Ghana has made great strides in providing its people with clean drinking water. But access to better sanitation has lagged. Only about 14 percent of Ghanaians have access to improved facilities, compared with the 54 percent target set for 2015 by the United Nations Millennium Development Goals. Addressing the issue isn't simple, as pit latrines need emptying, toilets need maintenance, and promoting hygiene requires education. The H2O Collaboration, a partnership between Rotary and the U.S. Agency for International...

Two years ago, U.S. Rotary members in Maine set out to improve the education system in Bikaner, Rajasthan, an Indian city near the border of Pakistan. The Rotary Club of Kennebunk Portside chose Bikaner because club member Rohit Mehta was originally from the area and had connections there. Mehta put the club in contact with Rotarians in India to provide desks for four government-run schools. But when community leaders returned with a request for more desks, the Maine Rotarians decided they had to think bigger. The Rotary Foundation had rolled out its new grant model, which required that the...

Enjoying calm winds and peaceful Pacific waters, Seung Jin Kim dove off his 43-foot sailboat, the Arapani, to swim with some dolphins nearby. The serenity that day near the equator was a stark contrast to the 60 mph winds and 23-foot waves he had to fight around Cape Horn, the southern tip of South America. But Kim, a veteran sailor and member of the Rotary Club of Seokmun, in Chungcheongnam, Korea, expected such challenges when he set out in mid-October on a 25,600-mile journey around the world. In addition to fulfilling a lifelong dream, Kim is using the trip to raise awareness and funds...
