Stories
Connecting for Good

Like many Rotary members, Mario Costantini is actively involved in his community. He and his wife own a business and support a variety of nonprofit organizations near their home in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, including Mad Hot Ballroom and Tap, an educational dance program for children. With so many commitments, Costantini hesitated when he was asked to join the Rotary Club of Milwaukee.

"I finally said yes out of a sense of obligation, but after I joined I realized how glad I was that I did," he says. "The connections I've made through my club have really helped my nonprofit work." At one club meeting, Costantini happened to sit next to club member Gregory Thornton, the superintendent of Milwaukee public schools. As a result of their conversation, the Mad Hot Ballroom and Tap program is offered in 50 public and private schools throughout the area.

"The members of my club are very involved in our city–we have business people, educators, and government officials," Costantini says. "It has been a great way to network with these wonderful people."

NCAA BASKETBALL SWEEPSTAKES FUNDRAISER
NCAA BASKETBALL SWEEPSTAKES FUNDRAISER or
“How do I sell these tickets when I don’t know anything about Basketball?”

When you receive your packet (or 2 or 3) of sweepstakes tickets, don’t panic – get excited about the opportunity to share Rotary – specifically, Madison West Towne-Middleton Rotary.  When you approach prospective buyers, please do so with confidence.  (It is pretty easy to ask someone to spend $10 on a ticket with the chance to win more.)

I would like to offer the following suggestions:

Ÿ             Be sure you are familiar with our Club’s projects that are of most interest to you.  This will allow you to let
buyers know where the money we raise, will be used.  (The money we raise will be used to support all of
Club’s worthy projects, but when you highlight those of most interest to you, you are speaking from the
                heart.)
Ÿ             Our sweepstakes tickets allow a buyer to (passively) participate in the NCAA Basketball Tournament.  It doesn’t matter if all teams make it to the “Final Four” – your buyer can still win.
Ÿ             The buyer doesn’t have to know anything about basketball.  This is the beauty of this great fundraiser.  Take advantage of the opportunity to show-off your basketball prowess.
Ÿ             Each ticket has four basketball teams listed (in no particular order).  The list of all possible teams is shown
on the back of the cards.  If a team on a buyer’s card doesn’t make the tournament – not to worry – the
“computer” replaces those teams automatically.  For example, when your buyer scratches off the four teams, Michigan State, Duke, UCLA and Oregon State appear.  When the tournament teams are announced, Oregon State doesn’t make it.  Prior to the beginning of play, the computer replaces Oregon State with St. Louis University (who wasn’t among those listed on the back of the card, but they make the tournament.)
Ÿ             Review the details of the card so that you can share the process of checking a ticket throughout the tourney.
Ÿ  Log on to our Club’s website at www.mwt-mrotaryclub.org/
Ÿ  Click on the “basketball” icon
Ÿ  Enter your ticket’s personal code
Ÿ  You will be able to see the results of your card after the last games of each weekend (by Monday)
Ÿ  Each of your team’s scores will be shown as well as your current placement (this is a hoot!)
Ÿ             The tickets pay on the HIGHEST cumulative scores as well as the LOWEST cumulative scores of your four
teams.  (So, if all four of your buyer’s teams get beat in the first round of the tourney, they could still be a winner.)
Ÿ             Don’t forget to remind your buyer’s of the coupons associated with their tickets (details on tickets).
Ÿ             Remember, these are not raffle tickets, they are sweepstakes tickets.
Ÿ             So, who do I approach about purchasing one of these valuable sweepstakes tickets?
Ÿ  Your family!  I have to believe your family members understand how important Rotary is to you.
Ÿ  Those you work with.  Surely they know about your commitment to WT-M Rotary.
Ÿ  Your neighbors.  Think of the amount wrapping paper and Girl Scout cookies you have purchased…over the years.
Ÿ  Your clients.  This is a great opportunity to let them know WHY Rotary is so important to you.
Ÿ  Guests and Visiting Rotarians at our weekly meetings.
Ÿ  Other Rotarians…from other Clubs.  What a great reason to do a make-up at another Club.
Ÿ  Keep your tickets with you at all times.  You never know when you may engage in a conversation
that leads to Rotary or the NCAA tourney.  You won’t want to miss the opportunity to sell one more ticket.
Ÿ             Please embrace this great opportunity to raise money to support our great Club projects.
Ÿ             HAVE FUN!
