Stories
Several weeks ago, one of our district’s inbound youth exchange students suffered a serious medical emergency. Jan Bonsett-Veal, our Rotary Youth Exchange chair explains:

“Maike came to Wisconsin in August 2014, a young lady excited to begin her Rotary exchange year as an inbound student from Germany. On January 19th her dream ended when she was rushed by med flight to a hospital in Madison to repair a bleed on her brain.

She spent 3 weeks in pediatric intensive care in critical condition and has just recently stabilized enough to be moved out of intensive care. She faces at least one more surgery with a 2-3 week recovery period before she can be released to travel back to Germany. The prognosis is that Maike will likely be paralyzed on one side but with 2-3 years of rehabilitation may regain her ability to speak, read and write.

Her family has traveled from Germany to be with her during this difficult time. They are so very appreciative of offers of support and the wonderful care their daughter continues to receive. The Ronald McDonald house has provided the family with meals and a place to stay when they are not at the hospital.”

In an effort to ease some of the unreimbursed financial burden, our District 6250 Charitable Trust has established a fund to accept donations. These contributions are 100% tax deductible and can be made by clubs or individuals. Since the family will most likely return to Germany sometime in the first part of March, time is of the essence. Checks may be sent to:

Please include “RYE Medical Emergency Fund” in the memo.

The Glacier Canyon Lodge Conference Center at the Wilderness Resort
Wisconsin Dells, WI

Our Rotary Foundation changes lives all over the world.  As Rotarians, we see this daily in our own back yards as well as in regions all over the planet.  Come celebrate the Magic that is our Foundation.  District 6250 First Annual Foundation Celebration will take place on March 21st, 2015 at the Wilderness Resort in Wisconsin Dells.

This event will not only give thanks to those who have supported Our Foundation over the years, but it will encourage Rotarians and Families to help give back right at this event.  We will be partnering with Kids Against Hunger hoping to package several thousand meals in this one day.  We are not only encouraging Rotarians to bring spouses and children, we are begging you!  We need the help to celebrate and give back!  Let’s allow our children and spouses/partners to truly experience Rotary.

For the younger kids there will be a kid friendly meal, a magician, and other entertainment.  For the rest of us, there will be a lunch as well, cash bar featuring Mimosas and Bloody Marys, sodas, and celebration.  We are inviting all 6250 Rotarians and family members to celebrate with us.  Whether you are a major donor of the foundation, or whether you want to simply help give back by volunteering to pack meals for a few hours, we want you.  Come celebrate with friends and family, learn about our foundation, and help people that could use a meal.  Stick around Saturday night with your friends/family with special rates at the Wilderness.

Let’s Celebrate The Magic of Our Foundation!

4 Things Rotarians can expect to get out of this event

Here is an update on the Rotary Youth Exchange Student, Maike, who was living in Baraboo and is currently in the UW Children's Hospital recovering from brain surgery.  This update is from Jan Bonsett-Veal who is our District Chair for Rotary Youth Exchange.

I thought you all might like an update on Maike. She had her last surgery today and it went well! The doctors put her skull back in place and hopefully she will be able to travel back to Germany in a few weeks. She is awake for a few hours each day, especially in the mornings. She is able to look at signs that say "yes" and "no" and move her eyes to one of them when asked a question. The nurses put her in a chair for some of each day. Over the past few days she has begun to make sounds which is the first step in being able to talk. We all know Maike has a lot of rehabilitation ahead of her but everyone is excited about the progress she is making.

If you would like to help her family with medical expenses, please send a donation to District 6250 Charitable Trust (Please include “RYE Medical Emergency Fund” in the memo) and mail it to

How does Rotary fulfill your need for service and fun?

Evan Burrell

By Evan Burrell, a member of the Rotary Club of Turramurra, New South Wales

I’ve been volunteering with Rotary ever since I was a kid. Well, since I was 18. Originally, I joined for my own selfish reasons. I wanted to meet new people and find a girlfriend. I didn’t join because of some great desire to help change the world. I hadn’t had much experience with that at the time. But I soon realized what a difference I was making.

The fulfillment I get out of Rotary is knowing I have done something to help improve someone else’s life. I think wanting to make a difference in the world is one of the most important virtues a person can develop.

I’m inspired by the people I meet in Rotary, the passion they pour into their roles, and the results they get. These people live, eat, and breathe the culture of the organization. And this is rewarded by the huge amount of goodwill and support that Rotary receives.

It’s also about the fun. “Fun is good,” said Dr. Seuss. So I put my own unique perspective on the Service above Self mantra by trying to inject liveliness in all our club’s volunteering efforts. If we didn’t enjoy our Rotary service, we wouldn’t turn up!

I enjoy making a contribution to my community, and I enjoy the fun I can have in Rotary. It gets me out of my own circle. I meet people from all walks of life, and basically feel like, “It doesn’t matter where you come from, we’re all equal as Rotarians.” Our world today is fast-paced, and it’s easy to forget how important it is to build community and have fun. If everyone in the world made an effort every day to have a positive impact on someone’s life, especially people they don’t know, the world would be a vastly better place.

I guess it’s kind of ingrained in me by now. That’s part of the reason why I joined Rotary and stayed with it for 16 years. How does Rotary fulfill your need for service and fun?

Save the date!

Despite his longstanding interest in polio eradication, polio was not on Joe Pratt's mind as he prepared for a mid-April 2012 climb of Mount Everest, the highest mountain on earth. But that changed in late 2011, when the resident of Nottingham, New Hampshire, USA, participated in a polio immunization project in Pakistan with fellow Rotary member Steve Puderbaugh. Moved by the efforts of the Pakistanis to battle the crippling disease, and by the vulnerability of the young victims, Pratt reset the focus of his climbing adventure. Pakistan is one of three countries where polio has never been...

Members of the Rotary Club of San Francisco Evening meet three times a month at a wine bar after work, share a social outing once a month, and promote all their activities on social media like Meetup and Facebook. As the first evening club in the city, it has attracted many young professionals from Silicon Valley tech firms whose work schedules keep them from joining a more traditional club that meets for breakfast or lunch. But more than that, the evening format has helped the club grow by 30 percent since it received its charter in mid-2013. Danielle Lallement, who was its charter president...

Blighted schools in the mountain city of Peja in western Kosovo are a reminder of the ethnic strife and war that ravaged this area in the 1990s. To restore ruined sanitation facilities in some of those schools, local Rotary members recently partnered with their counterparts from Colorado, USA. Though residents have been slowly rebuilding the city's infrastructure after years of neglect under earlier governments, most resources are going to improve roads, rebuild homes, and create new businesses. Little money remains to restore the schools. As a result, students have fallen ill, stayed home...

Rotary International released an additional $34.8 million in grants to support polio immunization activities in 10 countries, including Afghanistan, Nigeria, and Pakistan, the three countries where the disease has never been stopped. The funds, whose release was announced 20 January, will be used by the World Health Organization and UNICEF for polio immunization and surveillance activities in the 10 countries, as well as to provide technical assistance in several other countries in Africa. The grants include $8.1 million for Nigeria to support its final push to eradicate the disease. Nigeria...

Using their talents, expertise, and leadership, Rotary members worldwide are asked to be gifts to the world this upcoming 2015-16 Rotary year. Rotary International President-elect K.R. "Ravi" Ravindran called Sunday's address to incoming district governors the "most significant moment of my life." "All of you have been given so many gifts. And you have now been given this great gift: one year to take all your talents, all your gifts, everything that you are and can become -- and Be a Gift to the World," said Ravindran, revealing his presidential theme at the annual five-day training meeting...
