The Rotary Club of Madison West Towne-Middleton is sponsoring Josep Costajussa Tellez (nickname Pep), inbound student from Palau-solita i Plegamans, Spain. Pep is 16 years old and will arrive in Madison Friday, August 14, 2015. He lives in a small town about 20 minutes outside of Barcelona, Spain.
Pep’s father owns a small fabric recycling business and his mother is a lawyer. He has one older sister, Anna. Pep’s native languages are Spanish and Catalan and he speaks English quite well. He likes sports (especially soccer), movies, music and hanging out with his friends. Pep also enjoys reading newspapers and improving his cooking skills.
In school, his favorite subjects are math and gym and he has been the Class President for the last two years. Pep has traveled with his family to Italy, France, England, Gambia and Tunisia.
Pep will be attending Middleton High School and trying out for the soccer team. He is very excited to experience American culture. Please keep Pep in mind for any activities you may be able to include him in throughout his year here.
On Friday, August 7, 2015 we will induct Lindsay Lemmer as our newest member. Membership is Rotary's number one goal. Ending Polio is The Rotary Foundation's number one goal.
Membership is also one of our club goal's. With the recent inductions of Paul Quackenboss and Lindsay Lemmer, our average age of our members has dropped from 68 to 63. Younger members add much vitality and diversity to this club. Please make them feel welcomed and included as they are the future of our club.
Below is a recent statement from Bill Pritchard, District 6250 Membership Chair:
The 2014-2015 Final Membership numbers are in… we saw an INCREASE in our membership – rising 17 to 2946. This is the first time in the recent recorded memory of District 6250 that we saw a Membership increase for the year. My thanks to each and every one of you for keeping your existing members engaged and being attractive to new members at the FRONT of every Rotary conversation! We saw quite a few clubs post positive numbers – a full 20 of our 63 clubs. Anywhere from a +13 in the La Crosse AfterHours Club, to over 20% gains in Holmen (+6), Mayville (+6), Portage (+6), Richland Country (+4), Sauk Prairie (+6) and Wisconsin Dells (+6), to our newest tracked addition in Southwest Wisconsin Platteville and their 21 new members by year end – all contributed to making this a memorable year!
August 22 at 10 am we plan to have a canoeing/paddling excursion for our members, families and friends down the Wisconsin River. We will start from the Blackhawk River Run canoe rental and public boat launch site on Highway Y a few miles southwest of Sauk City.
You can bring your own canoe or rent one from the canoe rental site.
Please bring your own food and drinks (NO GLASS) and we will have a picnic on a sandbank around noon. You can return from Arena either at 3 pm or 5 pm.
We need everybody to sign up and pay by August 14. You can either sign up at our meetings or e-mail SveinMorner at smorner@sustaineng.com.
The cost for the canoeing will be as follows:
Rental Canoe: $35 per canoe
You can also arrange with the canoe rental to pick up your canoe ($20 per canoe) or to drive your car down ($20 per car) if you so wish.
The board has agreed to have a spot on our front page website that features member's businesses. In the near future, I will be looking for business logos to post online. We feel this is a good way to give free advertising to our companines and to let people know who we represent. This might intrigue new potential members who would be interested in networking with us.
An example of what the ad would look like:
My intention is the ads would rotate like a slide show and feature many businesses. If you would like to participate, please send me your company logo, otherwise, I will find one on the web. If you want to OPT out, please send me an email requesting not to participate by August 15.
Today marks one year since Nigeria last reported a polio case caused by wild poliovirus, putting the country on the brink of eradicating the paralyzing disease.
The last case was reported on 24 July 2014 in the northern state of Kano. If no cases are reported in the coming weeks, the World Health Organization is expected to remove Nigeria from the list of countries where polio is endemic, leaving just two: Afghanistan and Pakistan.
Nigeria is the last polio-endemic country in Africa. The continent is poised to reach its own first full year without any illness from the virus on 11 August.

The rules of the Shaftesbury Rodeo Academy are simple: no school, no rodeo. It’s a message that teenagers who attend school at Bisley Farm, most of whom have never attended any school regularly, take seriously. Because come Friday night, these aspiring rodeo heroes want to join their friends to ride bulls for a heart-stopping eight seconds, if they last that long.
The school in rural Queensland, Australia, also teaches the boys, who are of the Wakka Wakka Aboriginal people, basic academics and farming skills, including how to care for crops and livestock. It’s a fairly common form of...
Around the world, millions of adults are unable to read or write, and therefore struggle to earn a living for themselves and their families.
Even in the United States, with its considerable resources, there are 36 million adults who can’t read better than the average third-grader, according to the international nonprofit ProLiteracy. In Detroit, Michigan, a widely cited 2003 survey conducted by the National Institute for Literacy found that almost half of residents over age 16 were functionally illiterate -- unable to use reading, speaking, writing, and computer skills in everyday life....
