Stories
The Rotary Club of Madison West Towne-Middleton is sponsoring Josep Costajussa Tellez (nickname Pep), inbound student from Palau-solita i Plegamans, Spain.  Pep is 16 years old and will arrive in Madison Friday, August 14, 2015.  He lives in a small town about 20 minutes outside of Barcelona, Spain.

Pep’s father owns a small fabric recycling business and his mother is a lawyer.  He has one older sister, Anna. Pep’s native languages are Spanish and Catalan and he speaks English quite well.  He likes sports (especially soccer), movies, music and hanging out with his friends. Pep also enjoys reading newspapers and improving his cooking skills.

In school, his favorite subjects are math and gym and he has been the Class President for the last two years. Pep has traveled with his family to Italy, France, England, Gambia and Tunisia.

Pep will be attending Middleton High School and trying out for the soccer team. He is very excited to experience American culture. Please keep Pep in mind for any activities you may be able to include him in throughout his year here.

Subject: My arrival

Hello,

I have it all ready to go tomorrow to the United States, I feel a bit nervous but I’m very excited to be here.
See you tomorrow at the airport.

Thanks,

Pep

Pep Arrives in Madison on Friday, August 14 at 8:55 pm.  Please join us at the airport around 8:30 pm and let's welcome Pep to Wisconsin!

Youth exchange has been a club project for over 30 years.  Youth exchange is near and dear to my heart.  I've been involved with Youth Exchange at the District and Club Level since 2006.  Today (Friday, August 14, 2015), we welcome our next exchange student from Spain.  Josep Costajussa Tellez ("Pep" as we call him) will spend the next 11 months living in Middleton, Wisconsin.  Each student brings their own personality and talents to the club.  I look forward to meeting Pep and getting to know him.

Club members:  If you have plans to go somewhere or do something special, please think about inviting Pep to go with you.  The more opportunities we can provide him, the better his exchange year will be.  This is also another way to develop a relationship with him.  I know from experience, that having close bonds with RYE Students, is beneficial on both sides.

Please welcome Pep to our club and make him feel at home.

August 22 at 10 am we plan to have a canoeing/paddling excursion for our members, families and friends down the Wisconsin River. We will start from the Blackhawk River Run canoe rental and public boat launch site on Highway Y a few miles southwest of Sauk City.

You can bring your own canoe or rent one from the canoe rental site.

Please bring your own food and drinks (NO GLASS) and we will have a picnic on a sandbank around noon.  You can return from Arena either at 3 pm or 5 pm.

We need everybody to sign up and pay by August 14. You can either sign up at our meetings or e-mail Svein Morner at smorner@sustaineng.com.

The cost for the canoeing will be as follows:

Rental Canoe: $35 per canoe

You can also arrange with the canoe rental to pick up your canoe ($20 per canoe) or to drive your car down ($20 per car) if you so wish.

News from Rotary International
From the September 2015 issue of The Rotarian Eradicating polio is a complex job. Since 1988, we’ve collaborated with the World Health Organization, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and UNICEF to tackle the disease through our Global Polio Eradication Initiative. Here’s how our roles break down. The Strategist: WHO The World Health Organization (WHO) coordinates the management and administration of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative and provides technical and operational support to ministries of health in countries around the world. WHO is responsible for monitoring...

Today marks one year since Nigeria last reported a polio case caused by wild poliovirus, putting the country on the brink of eradicating the paralyzing disease. The last case was reported on 24 July 2014 in the northern state of Kano. If no cases are reported in the coming weeks, the World Health Organization is expected to remove Nigeria from the list of countries where polio is endemic, leaving just two: Afghanistan and Pakistan. Nigeria is the last polio-endemic country in Africa. The continent is poised to reach its own first full year without any illness from the virus on 11 August. “...

The rules of the Shaftesbury Rodeo Academy are simple: no school, no rodeo. It’s a message that teenagers who attend school at Bisley Farm, most of whom have never attended any school regularly, take seriously. Because come Friday night, these aspiring rodeo heroes want to join their friends to ride bulls for a heart-stopping eight seconds, if they last that long. The school in rural Queensland, Australia, also teaches the boys, who are of the Wakka Wakka Aboriginal people, basic academics and farming skills, including how to care for crops and livestock. It’s a fairly common form of...
