Mark your calendars for our Highway Clean-Up Community Service Project. We will meet at the Vitense Golf parking lot off Whitney Way at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, September 18.
Please wear long pants and bring work gloves. Garbage bags and safety vests will be provided. Spouses/partners and children in 9th grade or above are welcome to join us. It is a great way for high school students to fulfill volunteer service requirements. The project involves bending and light lifting. The stretch of road is just over a mile long.
We hope to have between 15 and 20 volunteers. We should be done by 7:00 p.m. so we can head to one of the area restaurants for dinner following our work. We will be having a sign-up at our upcoming meetings. If you have questions, please contact Rod Nilles or Dean Ryerson.
We need to find sponsors for The Great Rotary Oktoberfest on October 11, 2014.
Please help us find sponsors. They are the key to our success. We have a goal to reach $10,000 in sponsors and we need your help! I've attached a list of Verona Businesses that we have contacted already.
Please ask your business and/or other businesses that may be interested in this event.
“Alba Valle Izquier" (black/red top) arrived August 25th from Barcelona, Spain. She was greeted by Rotarians Dan Fose, Connie Smith, Toni Pabon and Ed Fink (photographer) along with all three of her Host Families.
She is a delightful 18 year old and is very excited to experience American culture. Please keep her in mind for any activities you are planning.”
The 51st Annual Madison Area Service Clubs Council Luncheon will be held Wednesday October 15, starting at noon at the Sheraton Hotel on John Nolen Drive. Join fellow Service Club members as we present the Community Youth Volunteer Award, and the Ruth Gordon Service Award to the worthy recipients.
Then listen to our special keynote speaker Leslie Ann Howard, the outgoing Executive Director of the United Way of Dane County, as she talks about the transformation of the United Way to change priorities to meet the needs of the community. This is a subject that is near and dear to her heart as she prepares to step down from her role as Executive Director. The ticket cost for the Luncheon will be $22.00, and will be added to your quarterly bill.
The lunch menu will consist of salad, rolls, grilled chicken and penne pasta with a roasted red peppers, hearts of palm, mushrooms, and fresh artichoke cream, beverages and cookies. A vegetable option is available. Sign up at today's meeting, final date for ordering a ticket will be the meeting on Sept. 26. Any questions, please contact Kevin Welton.
We are proud to host Alba Valle Izquierdo, inbound student from Spain. She is pictured with her first Host Mother, Carey Cress Fose, where they recently met in Barcelona. Alba is 18 and arrives in Madison August 28. She will be attending Middleton High School.
Alba lives in a four room flat near the center of Barcelona, located in northern Spain on the Mediterranean coast. Alba’s parents are both teachers. She has one older sister, Neila. Alba’s native languages are Spanish and Catalan and she speaks English quite well. She plays the piano, volunteers at a hospital and enjoys skiing, reading and writing.
Her favorite activity is travelling. She has been to England, Canada, Norway and Brazil in addition to several countries in Europe.

Misheelt Batjargal and her fellow club members are giving a voice to infants and toddlers in Mongolia who would otherwise live in a silent world.
As part of a large-scale community project, the Rotary Club of Ulaanbaatar Peace Avenue, Mongolia, is equipping hospitals with screening devices to test newborns’ hearing. Batjargal, an ear, nose, and throat physician, says screening to detect hearing loss is not routine nationwide in Mongolia. She estimates that more than 200 hundred children in the country lose their hearing each year.
But Batjargal believes this is preventable. Early screenings...
As photojournalist Allison Kwesell walks through the narrow streets of an Indian village, familiarity sets in. She visited here four years ago, when she first met Samir and his family. He was two years old then and had recently contracted polio.
Kwesell approaches the front porch of a home when she hears an older woman yelling “Samir! Samir!” She runs toward the voice, wondering if she’ll recognize the boy. She sees six children playing chase on the dry earth, the dirt forming clouds around their feet. From afar she notices a young boy, not unlike the other barefoot children in the backyard...
The village of Kumbharwadi is one of many in a drought-prone region near Mumbai, India. Until recently, its residents had access to only one well with drinkable water. During the summer months, the well runs dry, and the women and girls of the village travel three to four hours a day to search for water.
Enter Project Boond, undertaken by a Rotaract club, a Rotary club, and the Watershed Organization Trust to provide clean drinking water and sanitation facilities in Kumbharwadi. Nikunj Pherwani, 2013-14 president of the Rotaract Club of Hassaram Rijhumal College of Commerce and Economics in...
In Jamaica, 11-year-old Jordan Allwood reads his classmates a story about a lonely puppy who finds a new family.
The puppy grows into a big dog, enjoys walks along the beach, and survives a frightening autumn day when he is caught in a trap before being rescued by his family. Jordan's story is one of hundreds that were written by children ages 7-11 for a writing contest organized by the Rotary E-Club of the Caribbean 7020 and supported by clubs in 10 Caribbean nations.
The best stories, including Jordan's, were published in "The Butterfly StoryBook," produced by the club and sold through...
When Marty Hatala, a member of the Rotary Club of Boaz, Alabama, first traveled to Ghana in 2010 to volunteer at a local orphanage, she saw how local communities struggled to find clean water.
Though at least 80 percent of the country's population has access to improved water sources, according to UNICEF, 5 million Ghanaians still use water from unsafe sources. That leaves a significant part of the country's population susceptible to a range of diseases. Worldwide, one out of every five deaths among those under the age of five is caused by water-related diseases.
Hatala's experiences in Ghana...
