Each year our club recognizes one or two individual members for their outstanding service above self. Recipients are chosen by a committee of past members who have also received an Honorary Paul Harris Fellow Award from the club.
Congratulations to Ruth Domack who was honored by the club on Saturday, March 21, 2015 with her first Honorary Paul Harris Award.
Some things you may or may not know about Ruth:
Joined the club in 2008
served on the Board of Directors for 2 years
contributes to The Rotary Foundation
Actively participates in fundraisers and goes above and beyond the normal call of duty
Well educated and holds 2 degrees including an MBA from the University of Madison
Successful local realtor
Demonstrates service above self consistently by stepping up and gets jobs done!
She has a good sense of humor, a positive outlook on life, and she is down to earth.
Demonstrates good leadership and negotiation skills.
She is an asset to this club and our members.
She is a cog in the Rotary wheel and she propels this club forward.
She is our Club Secretary.
This year we selected two recipients to receive an Honorary Paul Harris Fellow Award. One member could not attend the Spring Social. That person will receive the recognition at a future club meeting.
Rotarians who contribute $1,000 to The Rotary Foundation can earn their own Paul Harris Fellow pin. This contribution can be over time (several years). There is no time limit on your contributions. For each $1,000 donated a member can earn a new pin PHF +1, +2, +3 etc…
Giving is easy. You can sign up for Rotary Direct and give on a recurring basis (month, quarterly, or annually) and the donations are taken from you credit or debit card. If you give $50 per quarter, in 5 years, you would earn a Paul Harris Fellow.
The Rotary Foundation is different and separate from the Madison West Towne-Middleton Rotary Foundation which is our club’s own foundation, not to be confused with TRF (The Rotary Foundation).
The Rotary Club of Madison West Towne-Middleton is sponsoring Josep, inbound student from Palau-solita i Plegamans,Spain. Josep is 16 years old and will arrive in Madison in August, 2015. He lives in a small town about 20 minutes outside of Barcelona, in northern Spain.
Josep’s father owns a small fabric recycling business and his mother is a lawyer. He has one older sister, Anna. Josep’s native languages are Spanish and Catalan and he speaks English quite well. He likes sports (especially soccer), movies, music and hanging out with his friends. Josep also enjoys reading newspapers and improving his cooking skills.
In school, his favorite subjects are math and gym and he has been the Class President for the last two years. Josep has traveled with his family to Italy, France, England, Gambia and Tunisia. He is very excited to experience American culture.
His host families need to live in or near the Middleton School District as he will be attending Middleton High School. If you or someone you know may be interested in hosting Josep for 3-4 months, please contact us.
Hosting is a wonderful experience! For more info on the program follow this link:
The Orphan Train Project conductor organization for Hogar de la Nina in Guatemala is St. Maria Goretti School of Madison. St. Maria Goretti announced it will spend $3,000 to fund vocational training for older students at the orphanage, to give them a chance for employment after leaving the home.
Many students in Guatemala only complete the 6th grade. Thus, the opportunity for additional training can be very significant to their futures. Programs students can select from include Commercial Food Preparation, Development of Office Solutions, Preparation of Foods and Beverages for Mass Consumption, Dressmaking and a pilot program which includes much shorter exposure to a combination of food prep and dressmaking.
The programs will be taught, for the most part, on the campus of the orphanage. The Orphan Train Intermediary for this project is LaMancha, Inc., a 501 (c) (3) organization out of Queensbury, New York. LaMancha has been active with the orphanage and the surrounding communities for several years. Each course of study is many hours long. We are grateful to the children and staff of St. Maria Goretti School and LaMancha for making all of this possible. St. Maria Goretti School has been involved with the Orphan Train Project for at least 17 years.
Did you know our club, The Rotary Club of Madison West Towne-Middleton" now belongs to The Middleton Chamber of Commerce? It's true! Thanks to Dick Murray, we are members of the chamber.
What does this mean to our club? Members of our club can participate in these chamber activities which includes networking and possibly recruiting new faces to our club. We could also get new ideas for weekly speakers. The list of possiblities this membership brings to our club is endless.
Get Moving Middleton
Get Moving Middleton is our monthly breakfast meeting. Stay informed about Middleton's community, the schools, the latest business trends, financial markets, health matters and more. These meetings allow you to take advantage of many of the benefits that Chamber membership has to offer. Networking time is provided until 7:45 a.m. when the program begins. The program consists of approximately four to six brief updates on a variety of community and business issues. These ‘first Thursday’ meetings are fun, informative, fast-paced and open to Chamber members and guests, a continental breakfast is provided.
The Business Social Hour is a popular and free monthly event that is open to members and guest. This is a great place to make new contacts, socialize and network in a fun & relaxing atmosphere.
Ask the Expert
Ask the Expert seminars occur monthly in the Spring and Fall. These educational sessions are an opportunity to learn and discuss current issues your business faces with other business. Sessions are facilitated by a subject matter expert or panel of experts, from this area, with “real-world” experience on the day's topic. Q&A wraps up each session.

Managing Risk: Social Media and Workplace Security
Many Club members have signed up to participate in the Rotary Friends Dinner Program. We hope that the dinners can be held during the next couple of months. If not, participants can work something else out. Please note the following:
- Groups will be assigned at random. A host will be contacting you about details.
- Members can still sign-up by contacting Jeannine Desautels. DEADLINE MARCH 31!
- Your participation does not require you to serve as a host.
- The purpose of the program is to further our relationships with one another, and to share in a potluck dinner as well.
We have been notified that our next Inbound Rotary Youth Exchange Student is Josep from Spain. Josep will be attending Middleton High School in the fall. We have the first host family, but need two more. If your family, or a family you know, is willing to discuss hosting, please contact Connie Smith or Dan Fose.
Alba, our current Inbound Rotary Exchange Student, continues doing well with the Middleton Ski Team. Soon, Alba will be moving to her third host family. It is customary for students to have three families. Having more than one host family gives the student an opportunity to experience American life from three different perspectives.
Our next Outbound Rotary Exchange Student is Laura Bessenecker. Laura attends East High School and is very excited about spending her next school year in Thailand.
Join Rotary Districts 6220, 6250 and 6270 as they celebrate 100 years of service. All district conferences are worthwhile but with three great districts working together, this one will be truly unforgettable!
The conference begins on Friday, May 15 with a breakfast at 8 am and district business meetings at 9:30 am. Excellent speakers and opportunities to celebrate, dialogue and learn will fill the balance of Friday and Saturday with a final breakfast and speaker bringing the event to a close on Sunday morning.
Discounted online early registration is available through March 31 on your district's website or directly at http://goo.gl/qrdKu9
After the first cases of Ebola reached Liberia's capital, Monrovia, last June, local Rotary members feared that the city's limited health care system wouldn't be able to contain the highly infectious, often-deadly disease.
Those fears were realized when infections quickly multiplied, underscoring the speed with which Ebola can spread in an urban center. It was the first time the hemorrhagic fever had threatened a major city since it erupted in West Africa last March.
Now, after months of crisis-level response, and with the number of new cases declining, club members are looking to the long...
Despite his longstanding interest in polio eradication, polio was not on Joe Pratt's mind as he prepared for a mid-April 2012 climb of Mount Everest, the highest mountain on earth. But that changed in late 2011, when the resident of Nottingham, New Hampshire, USA, participated in a polio immunization project in Pakistan with fellow Rotary member Steve Puderbaugh.
Moved by the efforts of the Pakistanis to battle the crippling disease, and by the vulnerability of the young victims, Pratt reset the focus of his climbing adventure. Pakistan is one of three countries where polio has never been...
Members of the Rotary Club of San Francisco Evening meet at a wine bar after work, share a social outing, and promote all their activities on social media like Meetup and Facebook.
As the first evening club in the city, it has attracted many young professionals from Silicon Valley tech firms whose work schedules keep them from joining a more traditional club that meets for breakfast or lunch. But more than that, the evening format has helped the club grow by 30 percent since it received its charter in mid-2013.
Danielle Lallement, who was its charter president, says the club has been...
