Speaker Recap - March 4, 2016`

March 4 Speaker Recap

Haywood Simmons, Jr.

Racial Disparity Impact

Haywood Simmons Jr. heads up pHitness Plus, a team of experts to cultivate awareness and create solutions for the health issues we face as a community. He spoke to the Club on positive outcomes -- how racial differences can be overcome by seeing people as they truly are. He expounded on the notion of empathy as a way to build understanding across the racial divides in our country. Interpersonal and societal advancement come from a combination of empathy, forgiveness, compassion, courage, understanding, and strategic planning. It is within our power to change both ourselves and the society around us.

Dear Decathlon Volunteer:

Your service at the State Finals resulted in another successful event.  You are an invaluable and much appreciated volunteer!  I sincerely hope that you enjoyed yourself and will contribute your time and talent again in 2017.

While your volunteer experience is still fresh in your mind, please take our online survey.  This link brings you directly to the survey to be completed:   https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/M55TSKC

Each season WIAD relies on the assistance of 400+ volunteers at the three competitions; annually, the State Finals utilizes over 100!  Every role plays an important part in preserving Wisconsin’s reputation as one of the top programs in the country.

Wilmot Union High School captured the title of 2016 State Champion for their third consecutive year.  The team will travel to Anchorage, AK for the 35th annual USAD National Finals on April 26-28.    While our State Champion is competing in AK, three additional WI teams, representing Large, Medium and Small schools, will test online.  The National division enrollment cutoffs, for Online Competition, differ from WI’s.   Sun Prairie, Waukesha West and Melrose-Mindoro High School are the entrants.  All participants, State Champs and Online teams, have the opportunity to earn the same awards, including college scholarships.

WIAD is a non-profit program dependent upon private funding and team entrance fees.  Fundraising presents a daunting challenge each season.  We are currently tapping into our reserves to make ends meet.  With your firsthand experience as an Academic Decathlon volunteer, please share your excitement and belief in the program’s benefits with the business community; a donation form is available on our website.  I encourage and welcome your suggestions and donor leads.

Please contact me if you would like to assist in any other way throughout the year.  You will find more results from this year’s Competition, along with news and schedules for the upcoming 2016-17 season at www.wiad.org.   The 2017 State Competition is scheduled for March 2-3 in Wisconsin Dells.  The USAD National Competition will be held at the Monona Terrace, in Madison, on April 20-22, 2017.    I look forward to your involvement in both!

With great regard,
Molly

The BIG Check
A special thanks to Mary Beth Growney Selene and Ryan Signs for their generous donation of the “Big Check” which can be seen in the photo below.  This check is reusable and the Madison West Towne-Middleton Rotary Foundation plans to put it to good use going forward.

The below was sent this week to thousands of supporters of The Foundation for Madison’s Public Schools.

Jefferson Middle School Receives $10,475 to purchase Chromebooks!

AVID Coordinator Cindy La Point, Learning Coordinator Julie Riebau and Principal Issac Kirkwood accept the check from Rotary Club

Recently, the Rotary Club of Madison West Towne-Middleton initiated its Adopt-a-School relationship with Jefferson Middle by awarding $10,475 to the school for the purchase of 30 Chromebooks, a charging cart, and a classroom set of headphones. The Chromebooks will enable students to utilize Google Classroom for all curricular areas as well as advancing opportunities for career exploration. While the Chromebooks will be used primarily by students enrolled in Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) classes, they will be available to the entire school.

The Rotary Club completed an extensive grant process in order to secure the funds used to purchase the Chromebooks. Rotary members are looking forward to taking advantage of volunteer opportunities at Jefferson and developing relationships with the students and staff. Next up will be decorating for the eighth grade dance!

Basketball Slam

Buy a ticket and your four teams are listed under the scratch off portion of the ticket.

The total scores of those four teams determine the winners and losers. The folks with the eight highest scores and the four lowest scores are paid cash.

You sell one discount ticket for $10.

You sell two discount tickets for $20 and the buyer gets a third ticket FREE  (emailed to them after they register the first two tickets) on Green Bee Fundraising website.

The discount portion of the ticket takes you to a website where you can get discounted offers in various businesses. That is what people are paying for; the Basketball Slam is an added bonus.

If you have tickets you must turn in the stub and the money by March 17, 2016 or return the tickets to Deb, Mick or Kevin.  You will be responsible for any missing tickets.

If you are going away during mid-March, TURN IN YOUR TICKETS BEFORE YOU LEAVE!

If you want to buyout of the fundraiser, the board suggests a $75.00 donation to the foundation.

News from Rotary International
Interact clubs are making a positive difference in schools and communities around the world. Leaders of sponsor Rotary clubs and districts should make sure their Interact clubs get the recognition they deserve by verifying that they qualify for a Presidential Citation. First, ensure that the Interact club status is active in Rotary's database by checking the Listing of Club-Sponsored Organizations report in Rotary Club Central. If a sponsored club is not listed, submit the Interact Club Certification Form by 1 March. Then, verify by 15 April that your Interact clubs have qualified for the...

Rotary members, their families and friends can support Rotary’s work by bidding on antiques, artwork, jewelry, and collectibles through eBay Live Auctions events. Each month, Rotary will promote on its social media outlets a set of upcoming Live Auctions events, and eBay, the world’s largest auction website, will donate a portion of all sale proceeds from those events to Rotary. Live Auctions events enable buyers to participate in auctions across the United States -- held at such auction houses as Sotheby’s, Swann, and Freeman’s -- without leaving home. Under this proceeds-sharing...

A new email purporting to be from Rotary Foundation Trustee Chair Ray Klinginsmith is targeting Rotary members. The email falsely claims that members can become End Polio Now ambassadors if they email club information to a Gmail address within 48 hours. The fraudulent email has the subject line “BECOME AN END POLIO AMBASSADOR” and is sent from a fake email address. This is a scam. Rotary staff is working to resolve the issue. Avoid being the victim of scams by deleting any email that appears suspicious.
