The presentation of Paul Harris Fellow recognition is The Rotary Foundation's way of expressing its appreciation for a substantial contribution to its humanitarian and educational programs. It is named for our founder, Paul Harris, a Chicago lawyer who started Rotary International with three business associates in 1905.
Congratulations Paul from all of us in the Rotary Club of Madison West Towne-Middleton for this well deserved recognition.
Jay Settersten of SetterTech presented his work on a wonderful project in Cambridge, Wisconsin. An old wastewater treatment area was replaced by a modern plant. What to do with the old system? To fill it in and reseed it would cost $350,000. Working with a team of local people (including the Lions Club), Jay helped transform the old area into a great little fishing area for local kids. Other fishing areas in the community has been deteriorating. The transformation was inexpensive: largely funded by volunteers, donations, and a $100,000 grant. Cambridge itself pitched in $50,000. The ponds had to be deepened to support the perch and bluegills over the winter. Planted with native vegetation and fed by springs (blocked by clay during the wastewater days), the ponds even sport a small island that fosters nesting for scores of bird species. A long-term self-sustaining project in which everyone wins – the community, the volunteers, and local kids.
Saturday, April 29 was cool, overcast and windy on Equity Lane in Fitchburg. The weather did not deter the work crew headed up by Todd Weigand from framing and sheathing 3 houses.

Help with preparing leader packets, measuring and cutting rope and other duties to make sure group leaders have everything they need. Prior to June 1.
MAD CITY CHALLENGE GROUP LEADER Each leader is assigned a group of 5-6 kids. Kids are given a list of tasks to complete around Madison (primarily around UW Campus/State St.).
Group Leader's Responsibilities:
Make sure the kids stay in a safe environment. They are out in the city so bus stops and crossing streets, etc. The kids are required to be holding onto a 10' rope from the time they leave Jefferson until the time they return. They may let go while on the city bus and bathroom stops. If at any time a student lets go of the rope - the group leader cuts off 6" of rope.
Check off tasks as the kids complete them. Leaders are not allowed to help their groups complete the tasks. No giving directions, hints, etc. - kids are on their own.
First Group goes Thursday, June 1st, second group Friday, June 2nd. Day of event 7:30am-2:30pm. If possible we meet the day before the group goes to go over any questions. Typically after school 2:40 pm for maybe a half hour.
Just to be clear, a group leader will walk with the students for the entire day which can add up to about 5 miles. If keeping up with middle school kids is a challenge, the party and/or preparing material might be a better fit.
You can make a difference in our community - participate in this and other great volunteer opportunities at Jefferson Middle School. Just click in the link below to download the volunteer application form and take the first step.
PIZZA PARTY
Help set up and facilitate the party at Jefferson after the Mad City Challenge (MCC). On June 1 and/or 2 in the afternoon.

The lunch venue has changed for the Rotary Youth Leadership Award students to Lake Lucerne Camp near Neshkoro which is a little farther away but has a great kitchen facility available to us. It is time again to think about whether you want money from our Rotary Club, District 6250 or the Rotary International Foundation. If you are interested in funding a project, please contact me so we can discuss how to write the best grant and to decide which grant application is appropriate. An abbreviated description is as follows:
Money from Our Club--for grants of $5,000 or less. The deadline was May 1st.
District 6250 Grants--for grants between $5,001 and $30,000. The deadline is May 25th. The grant must be sustainable and fall within 6 focus areas. This requires member involvement. A request for money only will be denied. You must submit he grant application to the District.
Rotary Foundation Grants--for grants of $30,000 or more. There is no deadline for filing. The grant must be sustainable and fall within 6 focus areas. This also requires member involvement.. A request for money only will be denied. It also requires an international partner Rotary Club. The District will assign a mentor to help you write the grant. You must submit the grant to the Rotary Foundation.
The Rotary Club of Madison West Towne-Middleton is sponsoring a high-school aged girl from Poland. She will arrive here in August, 2017 and is very excited to experience American culture.
Her host families need to live in or near the Memorial School District as she will be attending Memorial High School. If you or someone you know may be interested in hosting her for 3-4 months, please contact us.
I am looking for drivers for Best (Rotary Youth Exchange student) to get him to and from school/Rotary meetings. If you can help out with any of these dates please let me know ASAP. I now have to inform the school as to when he will be leaving for the meetings and it is helpful to let them know who will be picking him up and bringing him back. Thanks so much!
If you are volunteering with youth (one-on-one)? Mentoring, Youth Exchange, RYLA, Academic Decathlon, High School Business Plans, Etc... You must have an annual background check completed. This only applies if you are working with youth one-on-one. If you are in a group more than 2 people, you don't need a background check.
Please let me know of any events or special situations in our fellow Rotarians' lives where a card, flowers, or a plant would be appropriate for their situation.
