HYBRID MEETING  SEPTEMBER 30, 2022

Picnic at the Pope Farm on September 9, 2022.

A wonderful program by UW Geologist/Professor Eric Carson. Eric spoke about the geological formation of the Pope Farm before and after glaciation. You could see it before your very eyes as you gazed out at Lake Mendota.

The program was brought to us by Jim Olmsted.

LAST WEEKS MEETING - September 16, 2022

Dr. John Barnes, who served as president of Avian Pathologists, spoke about the work repopulating the Northern Bob White Quail to area farmlands whose numbers have dwindled because of changes in agriculture practices. Program by Ed Fink.

THIS WEEK'S PROGRAM:

Though now largely forgotten, UW-Madison chef Carson Gulley was a celebrated figure for his groundbreaking efforts crossing racial barriers as a culinary instructor, radio and television celebrity chef and as a pioneer in the local struggle for equal housing. Gulley used his fame to engage in a series of efforts to achieve equal standing in Madison and the state. The story of his life provides examples of the persistent practice of segregation and exclusion that African Americans actively experienced in Wisconsin. His is an important part of the still untold story about African Americans in Madison.

UPCOMING PROGRAMS:

September 30 - Lori Bessler of the Wisconsin Historical Society will talk about the top 5 genealogical collections in the United States and Canada. The staff brings together Services that include workshops, consultations and reference to assist researchers of all levels. Lori, Reference Librarian, will present information on the basics of genealogical research and highlight the amazing collection you will find at the Wisconsin Historical Society. Program by Jim Olmsted

October 7 - "Hearing Loss- The Silent Epidemic" Monique Hammond, a hospital pharmacist who lost her hearing in her left ear, wrote a book called "What Did You Say?" will discuss various aspects of hearing and the stresses that hearing loss creates. She also discusses on how to prevent hearing loss and better ways to cope with it. She has spoken to over 240 Rotary Clubs and had 130 Zoom calls to clubs in the US, Canada, Australia, Scotland and the UK. Many of us in our Rotary Club have hearing disabilities. There will be time for lots of questions and good discussion. Program by Kathy Roberg.

October 14 - Our own Dana Monogue, Superintendent of the Middleton School System will discuss the upcoming referendum. This will be an on-site luncheon at the brand-new Pope Elementary School, next door to the Pope Farm where we often picnic. Program by Kathy Roberg.

October 21 - President's discretion

October 28 - Bev Davis will attempt to present her program again which was canceled on June 10, Bev is an author, chaplain, and anti-bullying expert has degrees in Master Divinity from McCormick Theological Seminary and is a certified Dementia Practitioner. McAdow Miles Team Fundraiser

For years, led on by the powerful calves of Jerry McAdow, several riders have been bicycling together on Saturday mornings for exercise, for companionship, and for the sense of adventure. We’ve asked Club members to support our efforts by pledging dollars to the Rotary Foundation. It’s an important Club fundraiser. We are asking for pledges in the amount of $50, $100, or $250. This is your chance to give a boost to the Foundation’s coffers. We’re gonna ride no matter what!

Bulletin Publication Schedule

Members use the newsletter to invite guests, keep up to date and prepare for the next meeting. That means it would be most advantageous if the newsletter is out by Wednesday noon --- I would post with this "announcement" that means anything that needs to be included in the newsletter - needs to get to the editor by Monday night.

Dinner with Friends is Back!

After two year hiatus, “Dinner With Friends”is back! For our new members who might not be familiar with fun event, let me explain. Sign up to have dinner with several of your fellow Rotarians at one of their homes. It’s a potluck thing. Once you sign up, I will assign you to a host. You are free to come alone, with a spouse, a significant other, etc. we just need to know how many will attend.

Please send me the following info in order to be in the mix:
  • Name,
  • E-mail,
  • Phone number,
  • Number of people attending including yourself
  • Are you willing to be a host or not
There is no pressure to host in your home if this does not work for you but we do want you to sign up and participate. I will try to mix both of our groups which will afford us an opportunity to get to know each other better. The fellowship is awesome! Just ask those who have participated in the past. I hope you will all sign up soon. E-mail me with any questions.

We will run this for several weeks.

24 October 2022 is World Polio Day

As World Polio Day approaches, we’re getting ready to amplify our message about eradicating polio to protect the world’s children from this devastating disease.

We’ve made tremendous progress so far, and now’s the time to intensify our fight to make polio the second human disease ever to be eradicated. In 2020, the World Health Organization’s African region was certified free of wild poliovirus, showing that eradication is possible even in very difficult circumstances.

The wild poliovirus remains endemic in just two countries — Afghanistan and Pakistan— but as long as polio exists anywhere, it remains a threat everywhere. So let’s use World Polio Day to advocate for the support we need to end polio in countries where children are still as risk.

Get involved
Take action this World Polio Day by hosting virtual and community events, creating fundraisers, and sharing posts about the importance of polio eradication on social media.

Following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Olena Morhun fled with three of her children and made her way to Puławy, Poland. There they were welcomed by Krystyna Wilczyńska-Ciemięga, one of many Rotary members who have opened their homes to refugees.
