A SPECIAL NOTICE ON OUR MASK POLICY

Your Board met on Monday to cover the usual business and to take a look at the way we're dealing with masks and Covid in general ... and how this has affected our Club.

You all know attendance has been sorely impacted: Friday's meeting had nine physical attendees and ten via Zoom (not counting the speaker). Our Club currently has 52 active members (this doesn't include 4 honorary members). We're averaging about 40% of our pre-Covid attendance.

Starting with this Friday's meeting:
All in-person attendees must be vaccinated and masked. We're not going to ask for proof of vaccination. We'll let the four-way test handle that.
Unvaccinated people attend via Zoom, & we genuinely wish they do so.
  • If you eat or drink at the meeting, you'll see two special tables set aside for you. Most of the room will be for people not eating or drinking, and they'll be wearing masks all the time. You'll have your mask off while eating/drinking, obviously, but put it back on when you're done. The meeting runner and Board members in attendance will lovingly poke members who've let their masks slip.

  • People at the microphone may remove their mask while they're there. No removal of masks when talking from the floor ...  just go to the microphone and remove your mask.

  • We want the safest, healthiest environment for members to enjoy what they primarily come to the Club FOR: fellowship. We want to re-establish the importance of regular attendance in our members' lives. We can't do the good we do without engaged members. We think many have just gotten out of the habit of attending meetings regularly, especially in light of Covid. We want to change that. We NEED to change thatThe Board hopes this revised policy encourages more members to attend the meetings in-person. elatedly, we're aware that our usage of Zoom has been too-often problematic. We know this is an issue and we're working on it.  R
We'll do this in the context of RI's having spent over two billion dollars over the years promoting and delivering polio vaccines around the world as part of its life-affirming commitment. RI headquarters in Evanston admits no one without proof of vaccination. And our policy puts us in line with Dane County's mandate, as well as the guidance provided by our District Governor
We will review this policy regularly. We hope that Covid continues its downward trend. We'll follow Dane County on refining our mask policy. We have moved our Fiftieth Anniversary event from January to the spring in the hope that the Covid situation is better, and that we can hold part of the event outdoors.

Finally, please, please make a hearty effort to attend meetings in person. Venue directions are in the Bulletin. Your Club needs you.

If you have questions about this new policy, please reach out to President-Elect Kathy Roberg at kar8525@gmail.com

Former Member George Warren Has Passed

George Elliott Warren unexpectedly passed away on Oct. 16, 2021, after an unsurvivable stroke. George was born in Milwaukee, Wis., on May 19, 1943, to Anita Olivotti Warren and Wilbur Wesley Warren Jr. At the age of 16 he met a cute blonde in chemistry class at Washington High School -- they graduated together in1961. Working his way through college at UW-Milwaukee, George cracked a tooth while delivering Coca-Cola and, fascinated by the repair process, chose to attend Marquette Dental School. After graduating in 1966, he married his high school sweetheart, Julianne, and served as an Air Force Captain in Goose Bay Labrador, Canada. Two years later they returned to Wisconsin, newborn in tow, and shortly thereafter they started his dental practice in Madison. In 1982, UW Athletic Director Elroy Hirsch asked George to take the helm as UW Athletics Team Dentist, a position he held for more than 20 years before passing the torch to his son and fellow dentist, Robb. George quietly retired from dentistry in 2015.

Always one to live by his motto "Work hard, play hard," George had a wonderfully successful career, as well as a host of adventures with his wife, children, grandkids, siblings, nieces, nephews, and many close friends.
Anyone who met him could see how George was a beacon of happiness and light. He gave everything he had and then some, and somehow brought out the best in everyone. The world will never be the same without our steadfast, generous-to-a-fault Giving Tree.
George was preceded in death by his infant son, Scott Randolph Warren; his parents; his in-laws, James and Elizabeth Harty; sister-in-law, Gail Warren; and several dear friends. He is survived by Julianne, his wife of 55 years; daughter, Wendy Warren Grapentine (Mark); daughter, Meghan Warren McKinney (Scott); son, Robb Andrew Warren (Erin); his grandchildren, Jordan, Alexandra, Quinlan, Padraig, Maeve, Emma, and Claire; as well as his brother, Wilbur Wesley Warren III; sister, Sandy Warren Sironi (Rick); and cherished nieces and nephews, who have all been forever blessed by the extra 19 years with this incredible man in their lives.

As some may remember, George, collapsed during the CrazyLegs run in 2002. Resuscitation was started by a few medical professionals who were also running the race, and he was defibrillated by UW police. In appreciation of the fortuitous availability of that defibrillator, the family started the George Warren Defibrillator Fund which donates AEDs to locations in need.

In lieu of flowers and to celebrate George, we invite you to donate to the fund via Venmo @George-WarrenAEDFund or via mail to George Warren Defibrillator Fund c/o Wilbur Warren, Administrator 1610 30th Court, Kenosha, WI 53144.
A celebration of life will be held from noon to 3 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 24 at BISHOPS BAY COUNTRY CLUB, 3500 Bishops Bay Drive, Middleton, WI 53562. Several opportunities to share thoughts and memories will be made available throughout the open house remembrance.
