Service Event - Bring Items to Meeting Friday, October 21, 2022

President Kathy Roberg (and 5 companions) are traveling to the Dominican Republic on October 29 to meet up with the group of Haitian women she works with from Thiotte, Haiti.  As it is too dangerous to travel inside Haiti, the women will travel to Anse a Petre and cross the border into Pedernales DR.   They will be able to have 3 days and two nights together.  Among other things, the ladies asked for bars of soap, toothbrushes and toothpaste for the children (there are 109 children in the "surround school" project that they run).

Money was collected from members at the last meeting but likely still in need of small bars of soap (which is environmentally much better than shampoo/body wash in plastic bottles from hotels). and travel size toothpaste.  Toothbrushes - may have enough - but there are always people that can use them.

Kathy and her team thank you for this support.

District Gov Bauer Has a Challenge

District Governor Ben Bauer here! October is a full month with Environmental Days of Service, World Polio Day and the monthly theme is Community Economic Development Month. Plenty to be excited about and all causes that each of us are connected to in different ways.

Rotary members have been at the center of the worldwide effort to eradicate polio for more than three decades. Rotary launched PolioPlus in 1985. Since then, cases have plummeted more than 99.9%, sparing more than 20 million people from paralysis. Rotary has helped immunize nearly 3 billion children against polio, but we're not done. We've gotten recent reminders that this disease is only a plane ride away. Each of us can play a role in finishing this important work.

We've officially introduced the Polio Plus Society. This is a new program to recognize your gifts and pledges to support Polio Plus at a minimum of $100 per year. Check out the link to the Polio Plus Society page at rotary6250.org to start your pledge. Don't forget that every dollar you give this year and next is turned into 3 dollars with the 2:1 match from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

Lastly, if you can't give that amount, please know that no gift is too small and you can help in other ways like helping to plan a club event or fundraiser where funds raised go to Polio Plus.

To help us amplify our Polio Plus giving this year, we've got a special challenge for you!

Last year District 6250 Rotarians contributed $119,161 to Polio Plus. Your generosity is inspiring! Rotarians and clubs did this in lots of different ways and had lots of fun doing it. Our challenge is for you to help us achieve $130,000 in contributions to Polio Plus by March 20, 2023.  This is possible if Clubs and Rotarians renew their support at last year’s level and find an additional $200 per club. If we hit this goal, I'll dye my hair purple to help celebrate a job well done! Let's do this! See ya next time!

McAdow Miles Team Fundraiser

For years, led on by the powerful calves of Jerry McAdow, several riders have been bicycling together on Saturday mornings for exercise, for companionship, and for the sense of adventure. We’ve asked Club members to support our efforts by pledging dollars to the Rotary Foundation. It’s an important Club fundraiser. We are asking for pledges in the amount of $50, $100, or $250. This is your chance to give a boost to the Foundation’s coffers. We’re gonna ride no matter what!

Thailand Update #3

Sawat Dii Krap Family and Friends (Hello in Thai),

Greetings again from the other side of the world! I have now been in Hat Yai for 2 months. The second month definitely went by much faster than the first, and it both feels like I have been here for a long time and for no time at all. My host family and I continue to have fun together and grow closer through evening walks, meals at Hat Yai's many different delicious restaurants, and cable channel sports. School remains easy but engaging, with student teaching, Thai lessons, and classes continuing to fill my time. Outside of school my two favorite things to do right now are going to the gym and playing piano. With so much free time and very few commitments and deadlines, I have found myself sometimes feeling a bit aimless. Working out and practicing piano gives me goals to focus on and valuable momentum so that I use my time much better. I have also been reading, studying Thai, hanging out with friends, and have even just started to try meditation. Learning Thai is still definitely an uphill battle, but I am making progress.

The two most exciting things that happened in the last month were a trip to Bangkok for rotary orientation, and a vacation to Krabi with my third host family. At rotary orientation I met the other 16 exchange students in the southern district of Thailand, many of whom I became fast-friends with. We all bonded over our shared exchange experiences, and the 17 of us spent lots of time talking about our lives in Thailand and back home. Outside of sessions about rotary rules and what it means to be an exchange student, we had time to visit the bangkok royal palace, a nearby mall, and a few temples. The royal palace was truly impressive. I could have spent many hours exploring its different temples and many small details. The malls and other temples were fun too, and I enjoyed seeing a bit of Bangkok. I left the orientation feeling sad that my new friends live so far away, but happy for the new memories and connections I made.
