LAST WEEKS MEETING - September 16, 2022 Dr. John Barnes, who served as president of Avian Pathologists, spoke about the work repopulating the Northern Bob White Quail to area farmlands whose numbers have dwindled because of changes in agriculture practices. Program by Ed Fink. THIS WEEK'S PROGRAM: Though now largely forgotten, UW-Madison chef Carson Gulley was a celebrated figure for his groundbreaking efforts crossing racial barriers as a culinary instructor, radio and television celebrity chef and as a pioneer in the local struggle for equal housing. Gulley used his fame to engage in a series of efforts to achieve equal standing in Madison and the state. The story of his life provides examples of the persistent practice of segregation and exclusion that African Americans actively experienced in Wisconsin. His is an important part of the still untold story about African Americans in Madison. UPCOMING PROGRAMS: September 30 - Lori Bessler of the Wisconsin Historical Society will talk about the top 5 genealogical collections in the United States and Canada. The staff brings together Services that include workshops, consultations and reference to assist researchers of all levels. Lori, Reference Librarian, will present information on the basics of genealogical research and highlight the amazing collection you will find at the Wisconsin Historical Society. Program by Jim Olmsted October 7 - "Hearing Loss- The Silent Epidemic" Monique Hammond, a hospital pharmacist who lost her hearing in her left ear, wrote a book called "What Did You Say?" will discuss various aspects of hearing and the stresses that hearing loss creates. She also discusses on how to prevent hearing loss and better ways to cope with it. She has spoken to over 240 Rotary Clubs and had 130 Zoom calls to clubs in the US, Canada, Australia, Scotland and the UK. Many of us in our Rotary Club have hearing disabilities. There will be time for lots of questions and good discussion. Program by Kathy Roberg. October 14 - Our own Dana Monogue, Superintendent of the Middleton School System will discuss the upcoming referendum. This will be an on-site luncheon at the brand-new Pope Elementary School, next door to the Pope Farm where we often picnic. Program by Kathy Roberg. October 21 - President's discretion October 28 - Bev Davis will attempt to present her program again which was canceled on June 10, Bev is an author, chaplain, and anti-bullying expert has degrees in Master Divinity from McCormick Theological Seminary and is a certified Dementia Practitioner. She has spoken to audiences throughout Wisconsin and the Midwest about anti-bullying from first-hand experience being bullied as a young person growing up in Chicago.
