LAST WEEK'S MEETING

Madison native and world class bridge player, Glenna Shannahan, will discuss her craft and has taught on several cruise ships including the Crystal, Royal Canadian and Princess ships and played in ports of Greece, Turkey, England and Ireland. Locally she teaches at the bridge club of Madison. A player needs 500 points to become a master bridge player and usually takes 3 to 10 years to accomplish. Glenna has a whopping 7,000 points and is the only master teacher in Wisconsin.

The story of his life provides examples of the persistent practice of segregation and exclusion that African Americans actively experienced in Wisconsin. His is an important part of the still untold story about African Americans in Madison.

Lunches at our Weekly Club Meetings

We have now returned to having lunches at our weekly Club meetings provided by a caterer (TNT). Here are the procedures. When you arrive at the meeting, a Greeter will direct you to sign in on our Attendance Sheet at the Treasurer’s Assistant desk; at the same time, you will also check whether or not you are going to have the catered meal. If you select “Yes” for the meal, the $15 charge will appear on your next quarterly dues invoice (as we did pre-COVID).

If you bring a Guest, you have two options:
  1. You can pay $15 to the Treasurer’s Assistant at the time, either cash or check, or
  2. You can have the $15 charged to your account for payment with your next quarterly dues invoice.
All Guests will be asked to fill out a Guest Card and submit it to the Treasurer’s Assistant. Visiting Rotarians will fill out a Visiting Rotarian Card and submit it to the Treasurer’s Assistant.

For certain Guests (speakers, prospective members, RYE students, scholarship recipients, Rotary dignitaries, etc.) there will be no meal charge; the Club will cover the cost.

Visiting Rotarians will be asked to pay the $15 meal charge at the meeting, either cash or check.

Our Board of Directors has decided that only members and others who actually have a meal will pay for the meal (this is a change from past practice). Therefore, you have the option from week to week to choose whether or not you will take the meal. The same applies for Visiting Rotarians and Guests.

We need to accurately track the meals for two reasons:
  1. For billing members on their quarterly dues invoices, and
  2. For paying the charges from our caterer.

Our caterer needs to closely track how many people need to be served each week in order the have the appropriate amount of food available (not too little and not too much). To that end, if you know you will be bringing in a number of Guests for any reason, you should notify the Club Officers well in advance of the meeting.

Jack Ferreri Wants You to Respond

Jack Ferreri sent you  a list of members with name, email, and phone number. He will be ordering new badges, so also check your classification ... is that the one you want on your badge. Now's the time to change.

If you have a head shot of yourself you'd like me to attach to your ClubRunner profile, send that along and I'll take care of it. No head shots more than 30 years old, folks! Please your head shot (please not your, dog, or cat, or horse, or grandchild, or your fav superhero etc.).  The photo makes it easier to match names to members.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED TO COLLECT PRAIRIE SEEDS

The Community Service Committee in conjunction with Holy Wisdom Monastery would like to have a group of Rotary Volunteers help with collecting prairie seeds on Wednesday, August 31, 2022, from 9:00AM to 11:30AM. Volunteers can include other family members or friends who would like to help and spend some time outside. According to Weather Underground the weather should be fine on that day.

If you would like to volunteer please send an affirmative email to John Gerold at: jagerold39@gmail.com, or leave a message on his cell at (608) 234-2253.

Holy Wisdom Monastery is located at 4200 County Road M, Middleton. Turn into the drive way and take the right fork in the driveway to the top of the hill parking lot, where we will meet. Our own member Greg Armstrong and his Successor Amy Alstad, Director of Land Management & Environmental Education, will lead us out into the prairie and provide the equipment that we will need to harvest the seeds.
Looking forward to an interesting morning, hope to see you there.

Service Project & Fundraiser

The MWM ROTARY – (Madison West Middleton Rotary) has applied for a $500 grant that we will receive if we have 10 (now I hear 15 – bring your family) people volunteer for the IRONMAN OF WISCONSIN. No, not a lot of money – but a lot of fun at a huge community event … that is all good and fun!!

Jenny Aune (yes, wife of Steve) is in charge of the Run Personal Needs area on the Capitol Square Sunday, September 11th 2022. She describes this job in this way: “This is at the halfway point (13.1miles) of the marathon portion of the race. The athletes drop their bags to us before the race. (04:30–06:30 am) There are opportunities to volunteer early or in the afternoon. In the afternoon we hand them their bag as they run by our station. It’s really fun and inspiring.”

Here is what you need to do to register yourself:

1. Go to https://ironman.volunteerlocal.com/volunteer/?id=61147

2. Scroll down to RUN PERSONAL NEEDS (SUNDAY) CAPITOL SQUARE (or any job – we don’t need to register for same thing)

3. PICK YOUR TIME

4. BE SURE TO REGISTER AS Madison West Middleton Rotary

If you would like me to register you – send me your name.

Thailand so far!

I just wanted to check in from the other side of the world! I have been in Hat Yai, Thailand for 2.5 weeks and so far things are going really well. The food here is really yummy, I really love the town I am staying in, and the nature and temples are just stunning. But the highlight so far has definitely been the people. My host family has gone above and beyond to make me feel at home, and their kindness has made me less homesick and more comfortable than I thought I would be. They really enjoy having me try new foods and experiences, and boy have I enjoyed it too!

Beyond just my host family though, pretty much every person I have met so far has been very kind and welcoming. At school this means I already have a great group of friends, and I have also made friends with many adults from the local rotary club.

School is also good. I am taking a light course-load and am also having fun student-teaching some English and piano classes. When I have free periods at school I am studying Thai. It’s definitely not an easy language to learn but I’m making progress. Outside of school I’m either at Thai Kickboxing (I started lessons when I got here!), watching American football with my host dad, or hanging out with either rotary or school friends. I have gotten the Japanese encephalitis shot I needed to get here, and have a new SIM card.

Weekend Bike Ride for Fun & Money

For many years, the Madison West Towne – Middleton Rotary Club held an ongoing fundraiser called “McAdow Miles”, designed around Charter Member Jerry McAdow’s love for biking. In recent years it has evolved into “Team McAdow” to include participation by others who enjoy biking in a group.

We try to schedule a group ride each Saturday morning, starting in March and continuing into November, as the weather permits. Our bike rides are typically 10-to-18-mile loop rides (versus out-and-back), on off-road bike trails (as much as possible) with interesting sites, away from noisy highways, and sometimes include coffee shop or bakery stops, preferably with outdoor seating. Madison and Dane County offer a great variety of bike routes.

Now, with our expanded membership, we would like more members to join our group rides. We welcome other family members and friends to participate. This year, a number of riders are using their E-bikes.

The fundraiser aspect of Team McAdow is very low-key. We haven’t been asking for per-mile pledges, but we encourage our riders, other Club members and non-Rotarians to make annual contributions to this event. We will provide additional information in the coming weeks. Perhaps more than anything, Team McAdow provides an opportunity for us to spend time together doing what we enjoy – camaraderie, exercise and fun!

If you would like to join us, or for more information, please email or call John Olsen, johno.olsen@gmail.com, 608-220-2826. We try to email a ride plan to our riders on Thursday or Friday each week.

Club Greeters Needed

The Club Service Committee is once again looking for upcoming greeters and raffle ticket sellers.  I would like to invite you to volunteer to help keep our club meetings running smooth.  We are in need of club greeters for the following dates:

Please respond to the following:

**Yes I will be a greeter on:  August 26, September 9 (off site), September 16, September 23, or September 30.
**Yes I will sell raffle tickets on:  August 26, September 16, September 23, or September 30.
**Sorry, I can't help with these dates and Yes, I would like to volunteer in the future so keep me on the list.
**No, I am not able to volunteer, please take me off the volunteer email greeters/raffle sales list for now.

If I don't hear from you I will assume you want to remain in the email group for greeters and raffle ticket sellers.  I would also like to remind you that if you want to help by donating a door prize on your birthday (or just to help us stock pile up for the time we have missed due to covid) you can bring your donation to any meeting.
